Thanks to the GPU computing, I suspect that there will be something equivalent from here on out.

Windows Home Server / Home Server OS

My only complaint is removing multiple drives; it only lets you remove one drive at a time. This means that the data on that drive is re-balanced to all the remaining drives (including others you plan to remove), extending the process considerably. Considering the shares aren't available during...

Windows Home Server / Home Server OS

I'm loving Windows Home Server. I hadn't played with it at all, but just built one for the house and it is awesome. The workstation backup/restore functionality is easier than anything else I've seen. Even traditionally complex tasks, like adding (or, even worse, subtracting) drives from the...

They said they would keep some for warranty replacement. But then again, if it fails in a year, I'm sure they will have something equivalent to give you.

Yup. I could have a dual-port GbE NIC that is 4x, a pair of 8x RAID cards, and then a bunch of ATI video cards for some Eyefinity multi-monitor madness! Or not...

SSDs - State of the Product?

My X25-E were very slim, but the X25-M G2s came with a plastic spacer screwed onto the top to make them as thick as the Vertex drives. I would measure, but I just sold them.
  9. ddrueding

SSDs - State of the Product?

There are two standard thicknesses of 2.5" drive (IIRC, 9.5mm and 11mm). Even the Intel drives now ship with a spacer to make them conform to the more common, larger size.

    Is the JSF program corrupt?

Bringing back the A-10 would be a pretty obvious move IMHO. Significantly more ordinance on target than an Apache, for less money and with better survivability.

I haven't tried two of the same cards in the same machine (would be too confusing, IMHO), but I know 3Ware's software supports up to three cards at a time. I currently have an Areca 24-port and a 3Ware 16-port connected to a machine with another 10 onboard SATA connectors. This is temporary of...

What's the best wireless router these days?

I appreciate you doing the homework, but I just don't trust those stated specs very much. That Cisco looks interested (though it is likely just a Linksys underneath). I hear great things about DrayTek, but I recall them being difficult to source here.

What's the best wireless router these days?

I'm not even using the wireless bits. I could use a computer, but there are no machines in these locations, so it would have to be dedicated hardware. These are also industrial sites, so fanless low-heat solutions are favored. I do feel like I'm playing whack-a-mole; as soon as I fixed that...

At the office I'm running 1.5TB Samsungs. At home I'm running 2TB WD Greenpower drives mainly because I'm paying for the electricity, don't appreciate the extra heat, would have to put up with the extra noise, and don't have the SATA ports to spare. There are many reasons besides $/GB to go for...

What's the best wireless router these days?

I suspect that I am pushing these harder than most. They are running both ends of a PPTP tunnel that is handling a very large number of relatively small transactions. The aggregate throughput averages 300KB/s but spikes to 6MB/s, but that is a lot of connections. Now that I've thermal-epoxied...

What's the best wireless router these days?

I'm getting pretty desperate looking for some semblance of reliability from WRT54GLs these days. DD-WRT adds some reliability, under clocking it gets you some more. I'm now stripping the cases and mounting a heatsink on the main chip, and I'm considering using more reliable power bricks if I can...

Tannin, I'll need to agree with Handruin here. The Prius isn't a plug-in hybrid. It does get all it's energy from gasoline. Besides, all my power comes from a natural gas power plant, with carbon sequestration put into the production of cement.

I think so. But trying to convert those files to some other format is sometimes a pain. I'm currently having issues with "Up" and "Angels and Demons", as the movie itself is broken into multiple m2ts files. My normal workflow doesn't know what to do with this.

Ugh...been troubleshooting busted hardware for hours, just identified the culprit. One of the modular SATA power cables. Of course, I tested 4 motherboards, 3 CPUs, 6 sticks of RAM, and a pair of PSUs before I found it. Now I get to go back over everything.

SSDs - State of the Product?

I only have about 10 in use here, but have deployed at least another 50, probably more. I have also stuck a pair of 120GB Vertex and 160GB X-25M in a very heavily used VM Server for several months and they are holding out nicely.
