    dSLR thread

Today was 50/1.4 appreciation day. In testing conditions, it really is (18M)pixel-sharp. In the field, maybe half that - still better than anything else I have. Also took some pictures of fireworks on the 4th that I like. Both on my Flickr if you are interested.

    Lower Power

All 3 of my home systems and support hardware (including 14TB of storage) combined are currently drawing 210W. It is very easy and relatively inexpensive to build a fast and energy efficient workstation.

    Wiring a house for LED

That is the direction I was thinking. My wife wants a pool, putting a heat exchanger at the bottom of that would be effective.

    Wiring a house for LED

I agree, any technique that sends that heat from in the insulated envelope to the outside in an uncontrolled fashion is a leak. At the same time, even if it is only 6W per LED, that would be 72W for the 12 in the bedroom and 288W for the 48 in the great room. Being able to selectively include...

    Wiring a house for LED

Thanks for the info JTR, I'll evaluate the mast/sail idea; better than having a hole in the insulation. One of the stranger ideas I'm playing with for the whole house is using water to collect the heat from various sources and direct it either into or out of the house via two radiators and a...

    Wiring a house for LED

What temperature should I be keeping these LEDs at? Perhaps a "mast" of copper or aluminum to a "sail" above the insulation?
  28. ddrueding

    Wiring a house for LED

Sounds very interesting. Now another question. The ceiling will have significant amounts of insulation. I know LEDs need to be kept cool. If there were two feet of insulation directly on top of the fixture, and I only wanted the emitter exposed below, how would I cool it? First thought is a...

    Wiring a house for LED

I had thought of installing a large-ish transformer, and having a low-voltage DC run for general lighting. I knew 12v would have too much drop-off, but I hadn't considered 48v (I was thinking 24v). The question is, is it possible to run normal-ish wiring while accomplishing this task? If I...

    Wiring a house for LED

Yeah, one of the things I was talking with JTR about was a system that takes 120V (dimmable) in, and then dims large arrays of separate LEDs. That would allow for the individual LEDs to be just pinholes in the ceiling, giving an even distribution of light and no ugly fixtures or cans.
