Yup. The boss liked it and I was told to "continue building inventory". So I'll be buying more lights in January. I'm still trying to figure out how to go bigger; even this equipment required a special permit, we were clearing power lines by inches, and needed people walking both sides to make...

Went well. Set up in ~60 man-hours. Torn down in about 6. Run for about 1. Not the best ratio, but we were awfully popular with the few thousand spectators.

I should have put in a disclaimer; that was not my choice. But I'm sure you knew that. I even presented different options, and was working on putting together an event track for Rodrigo y Gabriella's Viking Man. Next year I'll be doing a 30,000 sqft. building with 40,000+ lights across 32+...

More progress, had to stop with only ~9,000 lights; it was maxing out the 4.8kW generator. I don't think it liked going from nothing to max and back several times a minute. Got some video on the 7D, now I need to figure out how to make it Youtube-able.

Thanks for the well wishes, it really wasn't a big deal. They just had to remove some stuff from my back and run some tests. I have no practical experience in 3D design, but that usually doesn't stop me. ;) If you have the dimensions for the relevant bits, I'll start putting something together.

Didn't mean to rush you, just checking in. I just got my stitches out on Wednesday, so I haven't been riding (they were right down my spine). If the enclosure is going to be a lot of work, you can skip that portion and I'll make it part of my eMachineShop project.

    Half Price REVO drive

I've never had any go bad, but others have so the potential is certainly there. I've only bought maybe a dozen, so the stats can't be settled just by me. It has its own RAID card built in, and that driver isn't built into Windows 7 or Server 2008, so you get to download the driver and add it...

If I were planning on supplementing my 7D, it would be with a 5DII. But I would absolutely wait until the 5DIII came out, to see if it's worth it or at least drive down the cost of the 5DII.

Started last night. That thing is huge; I need to lower the rotating beacon or it is more than 14' tall and not legal on the highway. It is also about 2.5' wider than the flatbed, so I need "oversize load" signs and magnetic navigation lights all over it. I had a crew of 2 for most of the...

Not a fan. Being able to use the card should at least require physical possession of the card without exception. From what I understand, there are ways to read the NFC in cards the same as passports and standard RFID keys.

I don't know that much about clustering, but the guy who is interested in a "beast system" says his load is "massively parallel". I figured 64 cores for under $10k would be the way to go. His work is something scientific, mathematica? Something like that.

Other than RAID-0, I don't see a compelling need in the SSD space at this time. The cost/GB is still high enough that your redundancy should be in HDDs wherever possible.

    Llano for HTPC?

If you are considering upgrading video later on, I might recommend simply starting with a low-end discrete GPU and evaluating upgrades later. You'll save nearly enough on the video card to cover it, end up with some better performance in the meantime, and have a more clear upgrade path for the...

I shipped that Sim2 projector back to the US repair center in Florida for $350. They "repaired the fan motor" for $25 and shipped it back. While they were at it they cleaned the whole unit and flashed to the latest firmware. Awfully nice of them.
