At $300 over invoice, I don't think even the nastiest of surprises would push you above an optimistic MSRP.

    Beverages

Vodka and Tonic is excellent, Vodka and fruit juice is fine. Vodka and Red Bull should be considered highly destructive (worse than many controlled substances) and should not be stocked at the same time.

It depends on how you want to go. The good news is that most of it never goes bad (and in fact may get better). Since you won't be consuming it regularly, you may as well get good stuff and represent a solid collection. Wine: Cabernet Sauvignon (red) Chardonnay (white) Beer: Ask someone else...

Nope. Went to one of the team members houses (who lived in Belgium at one point). One of the other team members actually competed there last year, so his commentary on the course was interesting.

I think it is further downstream than that. Even giving the host 20GB+ of RAM and making the drives SSDs doesn't change things much.

That performance hit is in line with what I encountered even with much faster hardware. If pure IO is what you need, VM will not help the situation.

question How do people buy music these days?

It plays in my office whenever I am there: 45 hours It streams to my cell phone whenever I'm riding my bike: 12 hours It plays at home when I'm surfing (like now): 10 hours? I'm awake about 120 hours a week, listening to music just more than half that time seems about right.

question How do people buy music these days?

I listen about 60 hours/week...that is a penny an hour. I'm OK with that.

The only encryption software I use (and not that often) is Truecrypt. Free, open-source, and fairly certainly unbreakable. I wouldn't bother with anything else.

    The death of Best Buy

Many things (including TVs, BluRay players, etc) have gotten so cheap and so good that most users couldn't go wrong scanning the feature list and buying on brand/price. I don't think it matters for the average customer any more.

    The death of Best Buy

People like us? I (and I'm sure Merc) have a decent inventory of bits, and have owned/held/fondled all the relevant tech from a big box store. My clients and friends no longer go to places like that for stuff; they call me and ask for a recommendation, and I either send them a link to...

    Tablet Data

Does your router support bandwidth usage reporting? Mine is a bit more advanced than many need; I use a computer running Smoothwall. But I suspect that many of the aftermarket firmwares for normal routers support it as well. You could also start at a small plan and monitor usage after the fact...

    Tablet Data

Not sure if it has one. Mine (ASUS Transformer, just updated to 4.03) has an item called "data usage" in the settings menu, but I think it is only for cellular data. If I wanted to check WiFi usage (not sure why) I would pull the data from my router by MAC address.

    Ivy Bridge details

It's just that it doesn't get you much that you can't already get with a normal i7. If you want the main thing that you can't get with an i7 (8 real cores), you still get squeezed for a workstation class board.

question How do people buy music these days?

I do Amazon and their cloud service if I want to buy, but I have a Pandora Subscription and 90%+ of my listening is there. If I really like something the "buy" link on Pandora sends me to Amazon anyway.

    Kepler GPU GeForce GTX 680

For the record, I've moved my machines from GTX580s to AMD7970s. I was getting an nVidia driver crash about once a day (more if I was gaming) on every single machine. It would kill my Civ5 game, Youtube video, or FSX mission and then carry on. Saying something about the driver not responding and...

    Best movie you've seen

But there is the problem. Life itself is like that. There are enough things that I experience in life that I don't like. I have no need for instant-replays of the un-fun bits. This is why I avoid most (all?) fictional programming.

    DVI KVM switches, any progress?

Not that this will help, but I just got rid of my last KVM in my server room. I have a cart with a USB keyboard, USB mouse, and monitor that supports VGA/DVI/HDMI/DP. I just plug them directly into servers as needed. The cabling mess alone made it not worth it, and when the variety of connectors...

Yup. Once a month for $10. No official races, but they tend to break out spontaneously around this crowd. My favorite is the downhill challenge; start at the top of the corkscrew and no pedaling. Whoever makes it the furthest wins.
