    Crap selection of laptops

Too good to be true? Sounds like it. The next day another bloke called from the place and said "AMD chip is dead, will cost $80+". Couldn't tell me if was the AMD CPU or which chip. Then I got an email that it was AMD chip 216-PQUY6A6VAR. Goggle knows nothing about this chip. I told them to...

    Cold

Not in New Delihi, but northern India is quite cold too. The Himalayan foothills have had a ton of snow and temps have gone negative Celsius. This happens every winter to some extent, but I believe it's been extra cold this year. Totally bizaorro.

I dropped off the laptop at a nearby repair place. The guy called now and said it could be fixed for ~ $46; something in the power circuit had gone wonky. I've asked him to fix it. We'll see how it goes.

Thanks DD, but no cigar. The power indicator stays lit for 7 seconds, then goes off. In this period, towards the end, the Bluetooth light flashes (going thru post). After this, the battery icon flashes once then all goes dead. Coug, I was talking about opening up the laptop's insides to see...

    Crap selection of laptops

The Dell Lattitude D531 my previous employer allowed me to keep seems to have gone tits-up. 6 years and 4 months old. Won't post, can't go into BIOS. When the power button is pressed, the power on light comes on then goes off after half a sec. Battery fully charged, does same thing when plugged...

    Cold

Tankless (flow-through) is quite popular, but so are storage units - anywhere from 10 liters to the 60 or 80 liter monsters we had at home when I grew up. The tankless are painful to use - the water flow is like a 3-year old pissing. Anything more and the water temp drops drastically. My...

    Cold

A testament to the tenacity of human beings. After we moved to our current location (which is about 3000 feet above MSL), I really miss the central heating that is common in the US. Minimums are ~ 14°C; nothing by your standards, but cold without heating. We are renting now, so no hot water...

    LED flashlights

Handy, be wary of claimed turbo output. Very few manufacturers will tell you run time at max output is limited - 3 mins, 5 mins, 10 mins, etc. Either the circuitry will step down the output, or you will because it'll get too hot to hold. Fenix lists this info in the manual for some of their...

    LED flashlights

Way too many flashlights do not use LiFePO4, specifically banning their use. It's also difficult to find good chargers for them. Handy, please read the instructions for the charger before deciding the charging rate. At least for NiMH, chargers look for the termination signal to stop charging...

Haswell Laptops 14" and smaller with at least FHD screens

Thanks guys. I'm aware of the consumer / business lines most PC/laptop makers have. My question was for a family member who's price conscious, not tech savvy, but wants a reliable machine. problem No way to immediately empty the spam folder's contents in Yahoo Mail

Sheesh, man, do you think I'm stupid? I never said I read every spam mail. I eyeball the sender column and if there's a genuine email, move that to the inbox. The rest get axed in one stroke. So much for helping people. Nasty sarcasm is the result.

    How long do drives last.

But the idea is that single retail units are packed so well that you can toss them around and the drive shouldn't get hurt. The "oem" drives are sold wrapped in an anti-static bag and noting else. If you drop that, then all the bits get mixed up inside.
