    NSK2400 build notes

I've been buying Barracuda 7200.14 3TB drives. They're well behaved and reasonably fast. I have about 30 of them and in the last year I've had to replace two. That's more than I'd like but not entirely unexpected based on past experiences with Seagate. 3TB models dip to $110 on Amazon/Newegg if...

PC Gaming = World of Suck

The problem is that Microsoft has a crap-ton of Xbox exclusive stuff that people actually want to play and all the media integration crap going for it. People are going to bitch about Xbox and then buy one anyway. It works for Valve and it will work for Microsoft.

    NSK2400 build notes

If you're using Windows 7 and the drives are set up as GPT disks, they should show up and be usable. If for some reason you format them on an XP machine you're going to wind up with weirdness.

    Planning for future storage requirements

One of my customers recently went from having an enterprise-wide need for perhaps ~10GB of storage to consuming 200GB more or less every weekend after they started taking HD video of live music performances in their restaurant/lounge/bar-things. I was awfully surprised when the drive on their...

    Haswell Build: Thoughts?

Don't PSUs become less efficient over time? I'm sure that a 500W unit is overspecified for the machines you're talking about but caps age about like batteries do so at some point they aren't going to be as good as they were when they were new, right?

It's acceptable if you're already in an application supported by the interface, like the Store. It's god awful for general purpose search because unlike Windows 7's version, it expects you to either search for a program by default (probably wrong) or else immediately choose the context for the...

    Haswell Build: Thoughts?

May I ask what you're upgrading from? Are you just going to run onboard video with it? I'm thinking carefully about making my next system an ITX machine, just to avoid the inevitable outcome of building another giant mid/full tower rig so I have another place to put hard drives.

The short answer is that there are workarounds for that. The bar-none easiest one is to just drop a shortcut to the path you want to include in the library. I don't see anything to indicate that it's been changed. I really wish Microsoft didn't consider software RAID1 a "Server" feature for Windows. LM, if you want more than four cores on Intel, you need to look at LGA2011 or at Xeons. Or you can buy an AMD CPU, I guess.
