Linux + FreeNAS + Crashplan setup

I've been repurposing fast spare machines (and out of warranty 3TB drives) as Plex servers rather than backup targets. You don't need a super CPU for crashplan, but the ability to support eight threads is super-helpful for Plex's video transcoding tasks. If you have the disk space and interest...

There are two conflicting bits of conventional wisdom. One is that you want different sorts of drives to prevent manufacturing or firmware defects from hosing an array. The other, which stems back to the days of EXTREMELY picky hardware controllers, is that if there's even a slight size/geometry...

SSDs - State of the Product?

It's an Intel device, so it's possible that it actually WILL work in RAID0, but I haven't seen anything to suggest that there's a configuration other than an Intel Rapid Storage RAID0 on Windows that's functional and supported by drive, OS and storage controller. Sure, you could try it, but it...

This kind of bullshit is why I tell people that they're better off with STBs that incorporate internet functionality rather than leaving it up to the TV itself. Can't you get Roku or even Chromecast down there?

One way to circumvent the legal requirement of public availability would be to present your services only to members of an organization that agrees to specific terms of service. I've been in places that use language like that to circumvent smoking bans. Of course, you're basically also...

PC Gaming = World of Suck

If you buy the Holiday Season sets, one of the bonuses is a printed white card with your real name on it. The second year I bought, I got a card that says "(Mercutio's) Butt." It's not quite as much a trump card as "Bees?" or "Bigger, Blacker Dick" but it's still my favorite.
