    Favorite motherboard with onboard video?

Ddrueding, there's an Asus S939 board with integrated nVidia 6100 graphics that includes a DVI connector. It's the only one I've seen.

Red birds, green birds and 3DMark06

Like one of the people who commented on the article, I only use it (3DMark01) for testing system stability. I did download 3DMark03 a while ago; recently I actually ran it on a couple of newer graphics cards out of curiosity. It did highlight how weak and useless FX5200 cards are, but I already...

Wow - I agree with you 100%! :D Unfortunately, I'd now have to add motherboards to the list, thanks to my epidemic of leaking capacitors - although that's usually after two years or more.

    Why doesn't somebody...

Like just about every appliance I can think of, computers use a switching mode power supply - there is no transformer. Ignoring the effect of input filters, it doesn't much matter whether the input is AC or DC. Voltages are dropped in the same way on your motherboard. Increasingly, the onboard...

    Choice of thermal compound

Dow Corning thermal transfer compound (white goop) has long been proven to last many years in general electronics applications. The pads are even better, partly because of their tolerance of movement - an issue with oversized coolers. I'm surprised that no-one has pointed out that with the...

    Bleagh

AFAIK, "dinki-di" is an adjective rather than a noun. So you should say that someone "is a dinki-di Australian" or that they "are dinki-di". I always thought the "cactus" reference was in fact "cactused", which I think helps one visualize the intent. Surpisingly, I've never heard the term...

PC Gaming = World of Suck

You were mistaken. People can be arrested for breaching a court's (judge's) orders, or on suspicion of them committing a crime (i.e. breaking a law). In our brave new (free) world, we also have the concept of 'detention', which is not always arrest. AFAIK, this is the sole province of...

    Epox 8KHA+ leaky capacitors

The fan had already been replaced, although it would have needed replacing again. :x The caps are clearly bulging. It still boots, but may or may not make it into Windows. I've checked another of the same vintage and it also has two bulging capacitors, but is yet to misbehave.

    Epox 8KHA+ leaky capacitors

Just had my first Gigabyte failure, a 7VAXP. I'm clinging to the fact that it used an unknown brand of capacitor, whereas more recent Gigabyte motherboards I've seen have generally stuck with Japanese 'name' brands. Unlike Asus, which I used to replace it ... :(

    Video Card advice

This seems to be our most recent video card thread, so ... I picked up a Sapphire 9250SE 128MB (64-bit) card on Friday to replace an MX440 with a noisily dying fan (I tried fitting a passive cooler but it ran way too hot). I've used them before and thought they were comparable to an FX5200...

PC Gaming = World of Suck

No, no, no! You can be fined etc for breaking copyright law, not for breaching a contract. You would have to be sued. However, laws such as the DMCA may give legal backing to certain aspects of a licence agreement. Shrinkwrap licences are highly contentious and may be unenforceable (because the...

    Weird problem with current OS

They don't have to be actually leaking, just bulging. Normally, the tops of the capacitors should be slightly concave. As gas builds up, this changes to convex; ultimately, the top will open enough to allow some electrolyte to escape. But the caps are shot well before then.

PC Gaming = World of Suck

The licence "agreement" (as it is so fancifully known) is a worthless piece of paper without a specific law to back it up. Under pressure from the US, such laws have already been enacted in most of "the free world". DMCA-style laws will be the icing on the cake.

Didja hear the one about Symantec?

Highly amusing indeed - but unfortunately, not at all surprising. :-? I see that NOD32 has added 'generic' detection of rootkits, to prevent new unknown ones being installed, i.e., it's less reliant on identfying signatures. Users should already have the update through the automated regular...

    I can't install Win98SE on my Gigabyte NF3 mobo

How far is it getting into the setup process? Can you try a different Win98 boot floppy? Do you have a PATA HDD? Have you tried without the TV capture card or anything else? Sometimes, it pays to just try a different CD-ROM drive. You could also try disabling ACPI in the BIOS (just to see...

    Boring bits

Asus provides more BIOS updates than probably any other manufacturer. You could be cynical and suggest they need to, but I'll concede that it does confer advantages, such as compatibility with new CPUs. For example, the DFI nForce3 board I used recently couldn't identify a current Sempron 3100...

I'd interpret this as saying it's a bog standard DDR2-400 SO-DIMM (which is good). Therefore, if you have a second slot available, the Kingston module you linked to should be just fine.

    Something Random

Cats are smart enough to adapt to bells - some people have resorted to multiple bells without success. If they cheese the cat off enough, it will find a way to remove them. Some prey is just too stupid to take any notice of the bell - and snakes are deaf. But yeah, the recognition system...

    Boring bits

Buck, I know you're a graphics agnostic, so I'm curious - why FX5200 over 9250? Availability? Price? Regarding your bad board, I take it you mean the voltage regulator rather than the memory controller, seeing the latter is (AFAIK) part of the CPU?

    Athlon 64 & 4x RAM

No. They don't have the relevant flag set in the header. No. AFAIK, /PAE is independent of /3G. The former tells the OS to use Intel's extensions to access more than 4GB of actual RAM, whereas the latter refers to the virtual address space available to an individual process. It's also worth...

At the risk of beating a drum here, try Opera with the Cached images option enabled. The browser displays already cached graphics (such as buttons, avatars, etc) but won't load additional graphics unless you tell it to, so bandwidth usage is the same as text only. It's a bit like having your...

They're ideal for backups, especially with packet writing software such as Ahead InCD. Not as good as DVD-RAM of course, but much cheaper and widely supported. I wouldn't consider using anything except Verbatim for DVD+RW, and I'd still stick with DVD+R for other purposes (DVD-R is no longer...

Combustion heaters chew up your oxygen, and to a greater or lesser extent replace some of it with Carbon Monoxide. Ergo, they can kill you in an enclosed space (although a shed is hardly likely to be airtight). Here's a plan for keeping warm: 1. Seal everything, especially the ill-fitting...
