    Worry-Free antivirus?

NOD32. Detects rootkits (apparently). Now has an optional thingy where if something looks suspicious, it phones home with the essential details (or something like that), so Eset can identify and handle nasties even sooner.

I excluded IE 6, partly because it's about to be replaced. I was clearly responding to your statement: "In other browsers you might not be so lucky." Your rapid raising of the stakes in these discussions is explicitly why I did not respond to you about CVT. Some of your claims in that thread...

I'm amazed. Although not as bad as some, 120mm Panaflos used to be far from quiet. Another alternative to Nexus (chiefly for people outside the US) is GlacialTech. Identical specs, i.e. 1000rpm, virtually silent yet effective.

Sorry, it's not even close to CD quality. If it sounds alright to you, that just highlights how the CD audio spec is actually overkill for many applications. I see that Wikipedia claims up to 30dB noise reduction with dbx, but I'd contend that 20dB is more realistic in practice. It's a long...

Obviously, or I would have had nothing to respond to. Would you prefer me to suggest that you're blowing smoke out of your ass? :) Hallelujah! It's a miracle! The only thing likely to reduce CPU utilization here is a different 'driver'. At a minimum, there are drivers from both nVidia and...

    Musings on a new PC

According to reviews, the AL C850 has a recording S/N ratio somewhere in the 80-90dB range. Some cassette decks claimed 65dB with Dolby B, but I recall 50-55dB being considered typical. 40-50dB seems likely if a few years have elapsed (no error correction!). 85 - 55 = 30dB, i.e. 3% of the...

I agree that this can be a problem, but in fact that's what Karajan is supposed to fix by localizing the audio circuitry away from the motherboard. In effect, some of the benefits of an add-in card at no extra cost. Grounding is always a potential hassle. I note, however, that some people have...

Firstly, "Karajan" is just DFI's name for their audio riser card. On this particular board, it uses Realtek AL C850 and will have the same degree of CPU utilization as any other similarly equipped motherboard. Secondly, audio quality from the AL C850 is quite acceptable for most purposes...

GM Pulls Ads From L.A. Times

Everyday cars have engines limited to 6000rpm or so. Differences in engine frictional losses aren't a big deal in this context. I have no idea what the fuel/air mixture has to do with your argument. Fuel 'efficiency' can mean many different things, including higher horsepower, more...

GM Pulls Ads From L.A. Times

Why not? The ratio of power output to engine displacement is interesting for engineers but irrelevant to users. You can raise HP/L by bolting on a turbocharger but that does not make it superior to a larger engine. More to the point, increasing HP/L does not improve fuel economy and may in fact...

The Samsung P120 (SP2504C) is an awfully nice drive. Very low vibration, very low noise, low power dissipation, very high data density; only the seek time is less than stellar, and even then only when compared to a Hitachi 7k250 (in the 7200rpm world). I like the 7k250, but I think you'll like...

    Notebook drives

It's amazing that those 2.5" drives work off USB power. Although WD doesn't quote peak spinup power, Hitachi lists 5W for their 2.5" drives. USB ports are only rated at 2.5W (5V @ 500mA) ... The WD pulls the full 2.5W when reading or writing, and 2W when idle. The Hitachi is clearly more...

Tom's Hardware without the Pabster master.

AFAIK, Tom Pabst hasn't been involved with THG content for years now. A search of THG shows he stopped writing articles in 2000, although he is credited with a small contribution in 2003. I also thought that Omid Rahmat had been running the show since 2001/2002 (before the abortive joint...

I can't let this go without pointing out that the hype surrounding Roberts is far greater than the reality ever was. Although obviously a great racer, I think it's a bit much to liken him to Ali. With five world titles, Mick Doohan is probably the best of the modern era. Valentino Rossi...

By itself, it would be quite credible. However, people need to realize that 1/4 mile times are more an indication of power delivery effectiveness than a reflection of a car's onroad performance. Always looks at the terminal speed - that's why it's quoted. In the case of the electric Atom, it...

    HIS brand video cards

HIS (Hightech) has been around for quite a while. I used them a few years ago (before they became an ATI-only shop) because they were better quality than most. I have one here that was salvaged from a 3 1/2 year old computer; it looks reasonably well made and has a good quality heatsink.

    Air Cat strikes again...

In my experience, it's a good idea to scruff a cat if they bite you. You just need to make it clear that the behaviour may have consequences. There's a theory that antisocial behaviour like this stems from early maternal separation, i.e. the mother needs to correct the kitten while they're...

AGP 8X, either Xeon, or Athlon motherboard, cpu recommend?

You'd better be quick, then. I just checked a supplier catalog: AMD 754 - two VIA AGP models left (one is mATX with IGP). Everything else is finished. AMD 939 - four out of five are PCI-e. Intel 775 - 10 out of 12 are PCI-e, one is AGP, and the remaining is PCI only. Although anti-virus...

AGP 8X, either Xeon, or Athlon motherboard, cpu recommend?

Greg, I agree wholeheartedly with CougTek. AGP is obsolete, I'd only use it for a low-end system or a repair. Of course, with a shortage of Athlon 64 below 3500+ and the abence of Socket 939 Semprons, that does raise the cost. :(
