Send that module back and get a different one? I've never found IBM/Lenovo notebooks to be super picky about RAM, but I usually go out of my way to buy Kingston or Corsair or (most often) Crucial-branded sticks.

To pull an SSD or not to pull an SSD

There was no way to reset the counter given the software available, but after watching the drives for a couple weeks, one of the suspect drives had its bad read count increase by 97 (from a base value of a little over 200000) and the other had no change over a two week time period. All SMART...

    Exchange Database Woes (Again)

To whom? Most places that offer hosted Exchange are on the order of $8 -10/user/month and would probably balk at trying to migrate Coug's mail stores in their current state, especially given the time-sensitive need for a fix. Is Coug's employer really going to be OK with a ~$15,000 annual...

    Don't laugh.

With regard to screen shape, I vastly prefer a 16x9 screen held in portrait orientation. That gives the sensation that I'm actually reading a book. Most tablet manufacturers subtly hint that you should hold their devices in landscape mode, but why would we care about what they think? Other...

    Old Thinkpad, new activation wrinkle

I have a 600-series sitting around my personal pile. I remember it as being eerily thin and light for the time, though now it's chunky compared to all the sexy ultrabooks out there. Another funny thing about those guys: How ever IBM developed the BIOS for those things, they're the oldest...

The emoji key needs to die

Right. I want the key give because it's placed where I want to swipe for the space bar. I think it might be an anti left handed person conspiracy.

The emoji key needs to die

Yeah, the smiley key. Lower right corner, occupying room that could otherwise be used by more space bar or a carriage return key. I also installed Kik and Whatsapp and it shows up in those as well, but not in Email software, Web browsers or note-taking apps. Like there's some kind of Android...

The emoji key needs to die

Can anyone explain to me why the Android keyboard sometimes truncates the spacebar in favor of a key devoted to inserting graphical smiley faces? I've tried all four of the keyboards on my phone and they all do it in at least some applications, most notably Hangouts, but also Skype and other...

Bitlocker is a standard feature of Windows Professional editions as of Windows 8 and one of the most compelling reasons to consider Windows 7 Ultimate or Enterprise edition for a power user. I don't remember what Lunar uses, but it's clearly not out of reach for him to have it.

If you're on a Windows machine, you have EFS and Bitlocker available to you. I was reading claims that someone had gotten sharing to work well enough in Hyper-V to service multiple desktop clients for video decoding. XP was the last version of Windows to use NTLDR and boot.ini. Contemporary versions of Windows use Boot Configuration Data with GUIDs to find bootable Windows installations. Editing BCD entries by hand is a PITA, but EasyBDC is just what it implies and will probably fix you right up.

Not really. This is production stuff. It's low-use/low volume, but I can't predict when it's being used, either. To pull an SSD or not to pull an SSD

Ordinarily, I'd pull drives at the first sign of problems but here's a case where my diagnostic tools don't agree and I can't create a reproducible issue. SSD drives have odd fail states and thus could just be something I don't recognize, which is why I'm third-guessing at this point.
