Well, considering I now have a T-1 at my disposal, and a dedicated UT2004 server running, let me make some firewall modifications and fire one up. Stay posted here, or you can catch me as 'ddrueding' on MSNIM or AIM.

Ever wanted to know the thoughts of car fans?

When I was still in High School, I tried my hand at restoring a 1966 Austin Healey Sprite Midget. I wasn't very good at the tuning work (the 1996CC inline-4 had twin carbs), and I was terrible at repairing the interior, but I rebuilt the entire wiring harness from scratch and had great fun with it.

Ever wanted to know the thoughts of car fans?

I think designing and building a car from the ground up would be a great experience. Not only can you get the lines, balance and dimnenstions exactly how you want them; but you can lose some of the crap stuck in modern cars.

    What type are you?

I think the most fun part of my new (and ridiculously fun) job running a gaming center is teaching people who haven't played games on computers before how to do it. Teaching is very fun and very rewarding (I spent quite a bit of time helping in a 3rd grade classroom a few years ago), but...

I hear ya. In addiditon to my 30 hours a week of normal consulting, I'm putting in an additional 42 hours a week at my new place. I had enough time to do my laundry for the first time in 2 weeks today. Sleep is further down the list.

    Gaming off the LAN? Feasibile?

Not necissarily Howell. The plan that Valve is offering is basically a bulk rate on the retail product. This is the one I had the highest hopes for, considering how difficult Steam is to manage in the gamecenter. But their "easy how to" is the exact same thing that I'm doing now. One of the...

    Gaming off the LAN? Feasibile?

No, I mean if they thought these things through, instead of just being a PITA. They've already come up with a great strategy, preventing multiple people from playing on the LAN/Internet with a key that's already in use. This is really hard to bypass and easy to implement. But then taking steps...

Er, em, yes....I guess I need to stop dismissing things without actually looking into them  Sorry about that. Yes, I'm learning quite a bit here. Though I am still quite serious about the whole thing, it is fascinating even at a theoretical level.

The price/GB is staggering. According to newegg, a 147GB SCA drive is $600, with the 73GB version going for $275.

    Gaming off the LAN? Feasibile?

If the game writers wern't asses, making their keys incredibly difficult to change, than this would be the easy solution. However, many of the games make it so difficult that re-installing the game is the easiest way to change the key.

Thanks for the detailed post. I really appreciate the time you've put into this crazy plan of mine. I'll try to do it justice in my response. First (SPOF): A single server. This is what I'm doing right now. I could do this, but it would cost an additional $2600. Ideally there would be no hard drive in the workstations at all. I have been thinking, however, that dedicating a GbE port to each client is a bit overkill as well. Working with the numbers provided my...

If you are happy to accept the item they sent, then they should be happy to refund the difference. If you would like the proper item, ask that they ship you the correct item and a pre-paid box to return the incorrect one. This way you keep hold of [i]something]/i] until they get it right.

Does anyone know of a motherboard with or more PCI-X busses? A couple Supermicro boards have 6 PCI-X slots, but I think they are all on the same bus. I think I'd need at least 3 busses to handle the load from all 20 machines, correct?

That would be an issue. The different companies have different policies, but the safest route is just to buy enough standard copies and not make a fuss. 20 games, 22 licences of each game, average cost ~$35. 20*22*35=$15,400 We don't want to pirate or steal games, that's why we're spending so much. By doing what I have described above, we are only keeing each licence of each game on one machine at a time. This is specifically to avoid...

    Gaming off the LAN? Feasibile?

Quite likely. But a pair servers as mentioned above with 2GB of RAM and Dual Opteron 240s would cost under $15k. If we are running diskless, that is saving me $2600 from the workstations, and not needing the GBoC 24-port switch allows me to save another $1300. The savings associated with...

This would be a quick death to this idea. It really becomes more feasible if there is no drive on the system whatsoever (due to the cost of drives "transferring" from the workstation to the server). OK, I have some more time...so here's the thought (if any) behind my maddness. This proposal isn't for my current project, it's for the second store (the funding is already in the bag). The problem is twofold: 1. We are currently using 36GB raptors and they are 95% full (UT2004 alone is...

This is a very undeveloped idea that I'm hoping you guys (gals?) can help me work through. I'm toying with the idea of mapping a drive to a server, than installing a game (UT2004 for example) to the mapped drive, then playing the game off the mapped drive. Clearly this will have some...
