How much heat does a G450 put out? I've come to the conclusion that a cooler, quieter system is more important than the possibility of playing games that I haven't touched at home for nearly 3 months. My only apps are web, office, winamp, DVD, photoshop; I take it this card will handle these...

I like that one. I once built a computer there all the components were just bolted to the underside of the desk. Using an integrated-everything motherboard and a small PSU, nothing was visible from the top at all. Fan noise was also reduced significantly as it was directed down towards the carpet.

This is from an external temp probe stuck on the underside of the drive near where the internal thermocouple is located.

I'm sure the drive is fine; I'm just putting it into a system with no case fans. I just finished doing a series of mods to the case, now there is only the 120mm exaust fan in the PS and a 92mm panaflo on the CPU. Temps are as follows: CPU: 113F/45C GPU: 113F/45C HDD: 110F/43C Ambient: 75F/24C...

Is this too hot? I don't want to install a case fan.

Just for the record, I just set up and tested 2x Mitsubishi 2040U monitors @ 2048x1536x32@75 running off a Radeon 9800Pro and a 9600Pro Ultimate Edition. They both looked the same to me. I don't have any other things to compare, though.

I have several of that exact card in the field. I've been very happy with them. They run cooler than any "3d" graphics card i've seen in a long time.

Yup. I can only guess that the foil shield is unintentionally grounded to either the board or one of the wires somewhere...I'll look into it more when I have more time. Right now I have 3 servers down in 3 different cities....great :roll:

Got it...I almost feel stupid saying what it was... I used an Antec Cobra rounded IDE cable for my DRU-700A. This is a really neat shielded cable that is thinner and more flexible than most. It also comes with a grounding strap on the end. Connecting this strap is the culprit.

It did an fact work with the new CPU for as much as an hour before I cracked the case open again and made more modifications.

Worth a try...we'll see how it goes.

That's from the BIOS before it choked (completely at idle). When doing basig tasks it runs @ 800Mhz @ 0.9v. I'm really impressed with the number of things I can do quickly without it speeding up. Making any changes to the BIOS causes the error in the OP.

That wouldn't really work, as the drive wouldn't know if sector y oon drive b was available. If the OS provided that information as part of the command I can see it working; but on more fragmented drives the commands might take longer than the data itself. Further, isn't the copying process...

Well, that's pretty much what I'm stuck with here. "BIOS defaults" are letting the system run; but I can't make any changes.

I actually did this swap the other day, and the HDD is running cool enough under standard load without any fans. Ambient at home is quite high (80F) and the HDD is currently @ 113F ... looks good enough to me.

Better motherboards also have "Clear CMOS" jumpers, but pulling the battery does the same thing. Checking to see if the motherboard is grounded is a great idea. I'll check that out when I get back to the house. I'm not seeing how a second BIOS could prevent this kind of thing more than once...
