What's the latest and greatest in anti spyware?

I consider putting the user through a reformat the same as putting them in the penalty box. I use my system a lot, and some of the sites I visit are not the most reputable. As an internet "power user", pretty much everything I could want is at my fingertips. I go everywhere and aquire some...

What's the latest and greatest in anti spyware?

I don't waste my time with those things anymore. I pretty much format at the first sign of infection. I have a 400GB USB drive that holds their data in the meantime.

Asking the impossible (my new computer)

I appreciate all the comments so far. Reasons I don't like laptops: 1. At some point they will be noisy; when the fans kick on. 2. The screen is too close to the keyboard; turns you into a hunchback. 3. Lack of upgrade options (better sound, SSD, better video, new wireless standards, etc)...

I'm also looking for a bluetooth remote control with at least 6 programmable buttons. If it's totally tricked out with an LCD display, that would be cool too, but small would also be nice.

While I'm at it, any suggested heatsinks for this thing? AM2 compatible, and keep in mind that the PSU kind of overhangs the CPU area.

Thanks Merc. Although loudspeakers will be one of the sets this will drive, others would include my soon-to-be-purchased speaker setup, and my current Klipsch setup. I want it to be good, whatever good is. As an interesting additional objective for the soundcard; of all the soundcards that put...

Asking the impossible (my new computer)

Yeah, I was hoping Merc could step in and provide his audio wisdom; but to be honest I have a BlueGears X-Plosion 7.1 just sitting here anyway. It puts out a bit of heat, but really nothing worth worrying about, and it seems to handle it well (even without ventilation for long periods). I'm...

Asking the impossible (my new computer)

For audio all I really need is really high quality 2-channel output. That's all. Does Intel have anything that would qualify? I've kind of decided that gaming isn't a necessity; I have other computers I can game on, but it needs to be the fastest 2-D available and support high-res video feeds...

Asking the impossible (my new computer)

The audio quality on an iPod is not up for the task. Neither is it's capacity or UI. I'll likely be using the internal soundcard as a monitor while playing on the better soundcard. Depending on the venue, the speakers will likely be something like this.

More thoughts: As the laser keyboard is only available in bluetooth, and I'll want a proper mouse, and probably some form of remote control for use from the dancefloor; I'll need a reciever. This looks like the longest range adapter available.

Perhaps a reason for the new rig with silly requirements would help. I've started DJing for some of the Tango events that I attend. Most of the people that do this have a laptop with a USB soundcard, a firewire HDD, and USB mouse. Being a geek, I want a solution with less cables ;) The plan is...

I'm tempted to try and get by with 6100-level graphics. IIRC, Merc has had some experience with these? Gigabyte GA-M61PM-S2 I'm pretty sure an Antec Aria will give me what I need. I built a system using one quite a while ago, and my only reservation with it was that the PS didn't have enough...

I haven't figured out how to do this yet, but here is what I want. SFF (Ideally a shuttle, no bigger than an Antec Aria) Dual-Core (Either Core2Duo or A64 X2) High quality 2-channel audio out (Are any onboard solutions any good?) Decent gaming video (I want to play games, but high quality is...

File fragmentation = more accesses to get a file, correct? If access time is zero (or near zero), that wouldn't slow down the copy, correct? $280 NIC

DSL is cheap, but a T-1 is still about $400/mo. Most of the games I care about (FPS) care more about ping than throughput. DSL in my experience has an average ping in the 40-120ms range, my T-1s average 5-10ms.

    80mm ->92mm convertor + fan == better temps?

Nice additions Mark. I forgot about game ports and RJ11, as no system I've worked with in years has had either. Parallel wastes WAY too much of the space in back; just fill the space with USB ports. The reset button is another good point, for just the reason you mention. However after following...

    1) I've been removing speakers from cases for years. I can't remember the last time someone actually wanted it. 2) I have a number of speakers mounted on very short wires (1cm?) to the header. They are designed to plug diectly in the mobo and support themselves. I believe they shipped with some...

I'd say this is only for the gamer that already has the fastest everything else. As has been stated here, better improvements can be had for cheaper elsewhere. However, after all the low-hanging fruit has been picked, this is cheaper than getting your own T-1.

    Silent Cooling

I agree with Mark that testing should have been easy, and results equally easy to provide. They mention installing temp monitoring software, but give no numbers at all. Upcoming Microsoft Peripherals

I use a big mouse (Logitech MX1000), and even at a relatively slow speed, it can traverse my entire desktop without any of it hanging off the edge of a 3.5" HDD. No desk space at all? It also works fine on my (admittedly oversized) thigh. Any space savings achieved by a trackball are insignificant.

    Upcoming Microsoft Peripherals

I spend maybe 30% of my time at a keyboard at someone else's keyboard. Therefore getting used to my special stuff would just frustrate me the rest of the time. Even if you don't use other people's PCs it probably makes switching to your laptop more frustrating.

    For all the Spinpoint fans

When I build computers for "office" use, they get a 160GB drive. When I build for "home" use, they get a 320GB drive. Unless they specifically state that they want more, they don't get it. 320GB for ~$100 is the most I can justify on a system unless they are willing to pay the premium.
