    SSD review

Well, my SSD arrived broken (packaging appeared fine, but SATA connector was fractured). When I shipped it back to newegg, they were out of stock. I got my money back. One impulse buy prevented ;) I won't be able to wait until next year, though. I'm sure I'll get another before then.

I've done the "1st half" of the Pacific, but I don't think I'll be doing the "bigger half" anytime soon. You guys have real pirates over there, with rocket launchers and machine guns.

    NSK2400 build notes

If it is in an NSK2400, I think the case fan is within a few mm of the cooler. I don't think one mounted to the cooler itself would help at all.

I've been just connecting the camera when I get home. It is programmed to automatically sync the pictures to a datestamped folder, so by the time I return from the kitchen it is well on it's way. By the time I finish cheking in here it's done. I'm just worried about the USB2 port on the camera...

    NSK2400 build notes

If I were putting one of these in a case, I wouldn't put a fan on it at all. I really doubt it will be necessary for anything under 100W.

    Microsoft Spying???

I would so love to get linux on the desktop at some of my clients, but too many of them have special windows-only apps to deal with. Going to an unsupported configuration (wine) is just unthinkable.

Nice. Pitty it is too big for all the 9.5mm laptops out there. I just hope it brings down the cost of the 64GB ones (and the 1.8" as well).

    Microsoft Spying???

There is a bigger question here. Was this update "pushed" from the server? Or do all XP/Vista machines "phone home" from time to time, checking for updates anyway. Although they are both scary, I am really worried if a server on the internet can push files to my computer and have them installed...

There is also a much, much more expensive 50mm f1.2 Canon lens. $75 $350 $1200 I wasn't even aware there was supposed to be a DOF indicator on the lens ring. My current lens doesn't have it. If being plastic makes it lighter, I'm all for that.

I'd rather not start a flame war on this, but I had an interesting discussion on this topic today, the basic conclusions are listed below. 1. Being a photo pro does not make you a computer pro. 2. The people that say what is quoted above take it as gospel; they have no benchmarks or actual...

So, this combination doesn't get me as much low-light/fast shutter goodness as I was after. Is the EF 50mm f/1.8 II going to be significantly better? Based on my understanding so far, it will require about 1/4 the shutter time @ 1.8 that my current lens does @ 3.5? Are there other factors to...

  23. ddrueding

    dSLR thread

Yup. It shows up as "20D" beneath removable storage, therefore SyncToy won't work with it. :( CS3 will open the RAW files after they are copied to the HDD, it just wouldn't see them on the camera via "WIA" mode.

    dSLR thread

Communication is set to "Normal". The only other option is "PTP". The OS Detects the camera, but "Disk Management" doesn't display it as a drive. When I'm in Photoshop CS3, it will import all the JPG images, but doesn't display the RAW ones at all.

Is there a reason I can't see the camera as a drive when it is connected via USB? Is there a reason that the Photoshop "Import->WIA-EOS20D" can't see the RAW images?

Please excuse the n00b question... I've been reading a LOT, and one thing still evades me. What property makes a macro lens a different category than a regular lens? Wikipedia says: So for my camera that would mean an object only 22mm across would need to fill the frame? Is the only...

    Multifunction Laser Printer/Scanner

Thanks for the clarification, Adcadet. The other bit of useful information is how big are the individual print jobs going to be. If everyone is just doing 1-2 page docs, then speed is practically irrelevant. If a few people a day will be printing manuals out of the thing, it needs to be faster.

When it comes to the larger volume toys I either use HP or Xerox. Depending on the volume, you might consider a copier/multifunction. I've had good luck with these, and their primary role as a copy machine makes the cost easier to swallow for a lot of people.
