I need at least 2 PCI-E slots. One for graphics and the other for the RAID card. I'm also afraid that the performance SSDs will only ship with SAS interferes, requiring another RAID card.

Currently it looks like the cheapest way to 8 cores is: TYAN S5372G2NR-LC - $250 Intel Xeon E5310 Clovertown 1.6GHz - $235ea. $720 But I would probably want faster cores, something like this: Intel Xeon E5345 Clovertown 2.33GHz - $500 So $1250...a bit steep. And I'm not sure about the...

From all the research I have done (but not personal experience), XP Pro will support 2 processors, regardless of the number of cores. Howerver, I have not seen a single dual socket-775 (or AM2 for that matter) motherboard for sale. It seems if you want more than one CPU, you go to socket 771...

JTR, This discussion highlights why public transportation is a waste of time. As has been brought out, "the people" will not accept any compromise from what they are used to, regardless of the other benefits. They won't accept a vehicle with shorter range, lower speed, longer refilling times...

Firefox's spell checker has a very limited range. You have to be very close, and it doesn't have any contextual guessing capabilities. I don't think it would do much good. Further, IIRC, Eric uses a laptop and simply doesn't put much effort into correcting typos.

That seems to be what all the online DOF calculators say as well. 35mm seems to be about right for capturing a 6ft person from 12ft away as well.
  32. ddrueding

    dSLR thread

50mm@f1.8 only gets a little over 1ft DOF, but 35mm@f2 manages 2.75'. That would be enough. Canon sells an EF 35mm f2 for a reasonable price (~$250). Thoughts? Hopefully the local shop doesn't have it in stock, so I'll be able to read your responses before I buy it ;)

    dSLR thread

Wow, doing some basic DOF calculations does not bode well. I understand that using a fast lens close to the subject causes a very low DOF, but even at 12' distance, 50mm@f1.4 gives a DOF <1ft! Backup plan: Hyperfocal distance? Nope....not until 300+ ft.

WTB: SATA backplane with 8-16 ports

Almost. All I want is the circuit board that the drives plug in to. The circuit board out of the case that you linked is the part# that I referenced above. The rest of the enclosure will be a custom job, but a backplane will make all the wiring easier.
