Is the concept of virtual memory obsolete?

I'm at 4GB because I use 32-bit Windows. 64-bit Windows is a special kind of hell; Vista is much better than XP, but it's still a minefield.

Is the concept of virtual memory obsolete?

Perhaps we've finally found something that Vista does better? When I give my computer a good thrashing, it stays responsive and everything still works.

That got me thinking. What is the price differential between 512MB thumbdrives and CD-R media? Will software take this intermediary step, or go entirely to online distribution?

Suggest a decent 19" LCD monitor

I noticed with my Samsung 191Ts that the image quality seemed much lower in Portrait. The "screen door effect" was worse, and view angle was much worse.

Is the concept of virtual memory obsolete?

The OS can address more than 4GB of memory if page files are factored in. Physical RAM is limited to <4GB.

Suggest a decent 19" LCD monitor

Let me know how it turns out. I'm thinking of using those in portrait mode as secondary screens, as their long dimension (20.4") is the same as the short dimension on my main screen.

She's the highly competitive sort. If she looks at a game and determines that I would be inherently better, she'd rather not play. Unfortunately, this ruled out poker last week as well. I'll consider it a project for the relationship at some future date.

Suggest a decent 19" LCD monitor

It does vary constantly, and since I'm using it as a monitor, I'm so close that I affect it as well. When I had the OSD showing that it was changing all the time it drove me crazy. Fortunately, I disabled the notification and it has fine enough settings that I don't notice all the changes.

Some people consider me too smug, or overconfident, or braggish, or that I talk too much. Guilty on all counts, really. It just seems to rub some people the wrong way.

If the image the lens projected was still full-frame, and the sensor only picked up a crop of it, I could understand that reasoning. But I was under the impression that the sensor's distance from the lens was adjusted to still catch the entire projected image.

Putumayo is great. Lots of the albums feature tango-able songs that I use in my classes. Can't help you much on the vibraphone jazz, except to point you towards the "Verve Jazz Masters" collection. Particularly Volumes 9 (Astrud Gilberto) and 39 (Cal Tjader). I have ~40 of them, and they are all...

    Video Capture Card & SW?

Thanks Merc. I'm not very familiar with this stuff, either. I've done networked cameras, but this place needs multiple cameras (I think they've settled on 4). I can either get 4 expensive IP cameras and have them log on to them independently, or have 4 "dumb" cameras hooked up to a capture card...

Can you create an image and restore it to the exact same hardware? If not, forget having to do it 80 times to start with, you'll have to do it every time a machine takes a dump. That really sucks.

Don't have one yet, but I suspect my next motherboard will be the GIGABYTE GA-X38-DQ6. I think I'll let the 1.6 crop be my conservative margin. So that means that shooting 100mm, it should be faster than 1/100. Which means @ f5.6, ISO800 on a cloudy day or thereabouts? So if I want to shoot ISO400, longer than 85mm requires IS or a much faster lens.

Do you mean an 85/1.8 or a 17-85/4-5.6 IS? The latter, at 475g and $US500 isn't too painful in any respect. Though it is slow.
