Low cost / High performance build suggestions

Core2Quad is too geeky and too cheap to ignore. It is fast and will be fast for a long time. Gigabyte has a bunch of motherboards with tons of features. If you are interested in low power and you don't game, consider using onboard video. Do you need parallel and serial ports? More than 4GB of...

    Tax Refunds Explained...

Move somewhere cheaper. Really, I mean it. If you can't afford to live where you are, it is your problem not the governments. Where I live is very expensive, and there is no cheap place to live nearby. Therefore even the illegal mexican maid or gardener charges $15/hr. Fine. If they are good...

    Tax Refunds Explained...

If he didn't use any shelters or deductions and payed exactly the declared percentage, how much extra money would the government get? Compared to having those shelters and deductions removed, making sure that everyone pays what they are supposed to?

    Tax Refunds Explained...

People will try to avoid paying taxes regardless of the system or how much they are supposed to pay. Buffett not using a loophole doesn't fix the problem. Bringing it to the attention of the public so it can be closed is the more effective method. Any tax plan more than a few pages long is too...

Excellent summary Gilbo. I've heard Warren Buffet speak a number of times, and he seems to have a good grasp of the situation (go figure).

I have about 20 clients total, perhaps 700 employees in all. This client in particular only has 3 offices; I visit each office about once a week, sometimes less.

    Trouble Ticket management software/service?

Perhaps only 5-10 items a day, but the trick is in my resolution schedule. What sometimes happens is that I will roll into an office with a single issue on my plate, and end up swamped for the rest of the day with items that I didn't even know about. Or get a call from the boss about...

    Apple wins Oscar/best picture :D

    low-end laser printers these days?

IMHO, the 4000, 4050, and 4100 series are the next best thing to the LJ4 and LJ5; as far as pure bullet-proof-ness is concerned. If features, speed, size, and noise are concerned; look elsewhere.

Both aren't bad. But I generally refer to "snappiness" which is probably more seeks than throughput. To be honest, with that much cache and areal density, it is hard to be slow.

I like monitoring usage at the gateway, it makes things cleaner. Of course, this won't save you if he is playing Solitare or other non-internet stuff. Smoothwall has an easy to add plugin for DansGuardian and some other reporting capabilities. Probably not the solution you want, just an idea.

A great analysis Tannin, but your software list is downright ancient.
