    NSK2400 build notes

My systems fall into two categories. 1. Opened/rebuild often enough that dust isn't an issue. 2. Never opened or thought about. In the second case, I've found that filters are better at strangling all airflow over time than letting parts get dusty.

    low-end laser printers these days?

A client has an HP MFC (not sure the model, but it is new and has a flatbed scanner) that clogs in 2 days if it isn't used. I ended up writing a script that prints a picture every day at midnight. Crazy.

Nichia Develops 60 Lumen Per Watt White LED

Thanks for the link, Mark. They put all that work into getting an accurate, consistent color balance, and then make it either 2700k or 3500k. Ugh. I've been looking into custom builds and having two dimmers, one for color temp and one for brightness. I like anything above about 4500k, and am...

Windows SMP Beta Testing client released

Thanks for the tips Mark. 1. The default folder is "C:\Program Files\Folding@Home Windows SMP Client V1.01" and that is where it is. Is that OK? 2. I had it as a service, I'll change that and see what happens. 3. This is certainly the first time it's been installed, so no other copies are on...

    low-end laser printers these days?

I must say that I agree with the general sentiment, but mine seems to be an exception. Brother MFC-440CN I print 1 page of driving directions every other week or so, and they always just work. The cartridges don't gum up and ink level reporting works well. I don't know how long they last, as...

    Something Random

Overclocking isn't really an art anymore, is it. Now that you can dissasociate the RAM and CPU, and all the voltages are in the BIOS and easy to access. In 30 seconds I went from 2.4Ghz to 3.5 directly (no voltage changes or anything!). Now I'm just checking stability.

SSDs - State of the Product?

That is still a ways out I suspect. It has already dropped to the point where interest has increased significantly, and performance increases are more incremental. I'm hoping for a 150MB read/100MB write, that will be better STR numbers than the Raptors and (of course) the access time should rock.

SSDs - State of the Product?

Well, it seems there aren't enough suppliers, manufacturers, or tight enough competition to warrant a spreadsheet. It's pretty clear to me that MTRON rules the performance SSD roost. Not that there aren't faster (MemoRight), but that the 100%+ cost increase doesn't justify the 10% performance...

SSDs - State of the Product?

That is a fine idea. All of my HTPCs run 2.5" drives (though I usually spring for 7200RPM).
  22. ddrueding

SSDs - State of the Product?

I wouldn't do Vista on a CF; the speed is unlikely to be satisfactory. If it were just a folding machine, and could run TinyXP or Ubuntu, than it would be fine. For Vista, I would consider the small SSDs instead.

    cheap raid storage

In Linux, a true software RAID can be made of any drives on any controller. Just add drives via the on-board connectors and when you run out, get an add-on controller. What hardware are you starting with? I don't know about used drives (I don't trust them), but 500GB used to be the best GB/$...

    1TB Sansung test

For a given price point, more cores means a lower clock on each core. SSDs - State of the Product?

I agree with SD. I use CF cards in IDE adapters all the time for my firewalls (2-4 a month?). The only trick is to be sure the BIOS can disable DMA support, as the adapters don't support it (even when the cards do).

SSDs - State of the Product?

Although shopping for my specific needs of the moment is nice, I really was hoping for more of a summary of what is out there. Who is currently shipping SSDs in volume? What is the range of speeds available? For my needs, I'm hoping not to lose too much STR over my current RAID-0 of Raptors...

Agreed. Though I don't think China is the answer. They still have a long, long way to go. They have too many people to do anything quickly. I was actually thinking of Singapore for a while, but now that I'm learning Russian, perhaps the *stans are a decent place to "get ahead".

    Clean ISO 3200 in low-res P&S?

If you take one of these crazy 10MP P&S cameras and do a high-speed shot with it, then take it into PP with the intent to leave with only a 1MP image, what sort of quality to you get? Surely being able to "burn" that much resolution will get you somewhere?
