WD to launch 2TB drives, lose data

I believe it was that massive anatomy of an SSD article that was in the SSD thread a while back.

Probably not without a BIOS re-flash, maybe some soldering. I was joking, but now you have me curious. ;)

WD to launch 2TB drives, lose data

IIRC, there was 256MB of buffer and just enough battery to write it all.

You don't plan on OC'ing your netbook? :p No, no difference that I can imagine. If they are the same price, may as well get the faster one.

WD to launch 2TB drives, lose data

There is a buffer and a battery on the Intel SSDs, but the cheaper ones have nothing, or 64k at best.

    Something Random

I'm getting better at flying my RC helicopter (Belt-CP v2). It is capable of some hardcore 3d flying, but I have this crazy idea of mounting a dSLR to it and doing aerial photography. That would be an expensive crash.

I am aware of this flatness you speak of, Tony. And unfortunately, it has been quite bad lately. Most of these were even shot the day after a strong rain, hoping to clear out the air. This time of year, the sky is mostly without clouds, so I lose that interest as well. I'll try to get some other...

I was thinking of getting the 24mm T/S, but had the same concern. That was the primary reason for my interest in getting a tethered laptop with a good screen. I still way go that way, but I have no idea how hard it would be to get a tilted focal plane to align with a multi-shot panorama. Just...

Thanks guys. As is usually the case, the things you say are correct, and I just hadn't put enough value to them. It's not that I believe that newer is always better, but that the features I haven't tried could be fun/worthwhile. They usually aren't, but I like to have them/try them anyway. Full...

    500 GB

That would depend on your metric for both. I suspect that you are willing to pay a premium for SSDs, and that speed for your large drives isn't as important. If they could get down to merely double in price, and not completely suck at small random write performance, I doubt they would have a...

Looking at the Nikon stuff, the 5DII seems to sit between the D300 and D3 in terms of price, but much closer to the D3 in terms of features. Thoughts?

    dSLR thread

I'm actually living off the 35/2 prime these days; I just like the amount of space it captures. Occasionally I'll take out the 50/1.8, and once in the last 4 months I took the 75-300 out for a single shot. I do mourn the loss of my 10-22, but I don't think I'd be using it much, anyway. Of...

WD to launch 2TB drives, lose data

How much does this cache cost, anyway? Why not 256MB? I'd guess the real-world performance would go up considerably.

Yup. Every time I evaluated a netbook, I thought "more memory and CPU is all I need". I've come to the conclusion that what I need isn't a netbook.

    Netbook for the wife

Let me know how it goes. I've basically come to the conclusion that my Aspire One is fine for web stuff, but I really want a small full-featured machine. Even playing with the idea of a Shuttle SFF for photo editing on trips.

I'm generally satisfied with the APC units. My only complaint with them is that when their battery dies (usually several years), there isn't any notification. It just fails to keep the system running. For really important stuff I have put two in series before, testing them regularly.

How do I turn this system into a HTPC?

I still have the sound card, depends on what you mean by "normal". If your amp takes SPDIF or TOSLINK, then yes. If it takes RCA, you'll need a bunch of 1/8" to RCA adapters ($3 ea @ Radioshack).

Some KVM switches have a USB port on them. Sticking a hub on that and all your peripherals off that is the best way. Some devices have issues with this, and I've never tried it with a Wacom.

It depends. I can drop $20k for the main office, where 250+ people use the web and all the remote site VPNs connect. Some of the remote locations only have 2 people selling sand (literally) or 5 people renting out porta-potties (seriously). In order to keep these locations profitable, some...
