    Affordable graphics cards

Ah. I was actually asking semi-rhetorically, as I know (at least) that their nVidia cards are fine quality. They are actually my first choice as a mfgr, as their cooling options are better than most.

    problem Good summer hiking/backpacking boots

I've put at least 600 miles on my Vasque boots (an older version of this). Though the soles did get a bit melted by being too close to lava in Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park, they still held up for 325+ miles of the Anapurna trail and every hike I've done in the nearly 10 years since. Although...

SSDs - State of the Product?

I vaguely recall something about a special formatting tool to align the logical clusters with the SSDs physical blocks. It was supposed to help, but I've never bothered with it as I am completely happy with the performance of my SSDs.

SSDs - State of the Product?

IIRC, they are rated for 8x5 writing for 5+ years still way more than enough. With the tech moving as quickly as it is, none of these drives will be in use 5 years from now.

    Affordable graphics cards

nVidia is able to have a single download that handles driver installation for all their video cards. ...except that I have some experience with computers. The system uses standard components and has, in the past, been home to an 8800GTS, 9800GT, and 250GTS. I then dropped in a Gigabyte 4350...

SSDs - State of the Product?

Almost. A HDD can overwrite any chunk of data with new data at any time without penalty. SSDs must erase an entire block before making any change to it, overwrites aren't possible. This adds an additional time penalty to any write operation. You can disregard the wear leveling bits for the...

Nope, just slows down the whole operation ;)

SSDs - State of the Product?

No, TRIM prevents the write penalty caused by all blocks already containing data by clearing blocks before they are needed. Without it, blocks are cleared after the write has been requested, incurring a performance penalty.

SSDs - State of the Product?

You're spot on, Will. HDD can just overwrite a block of data that has been previously marked as empty. SSDs need to erase an entire block before any part of it can be written. The wear leveling part is pretty easy to understand; the first pass will use every block on the drive. From then on...

If you're using it as a scratch drive, they have a complete wipe program that makes it like-new.

I suspect it will be the bees knees, dogs nuts or some such thing. If it really does what I think it's supposed to do (clear free space in idle time).

SSDs - State of the Product?

The Vertex in RAID-0 is just fine for my needs. I'll go to 4 120GB in RAID-0 and stop worrying about what drive data is on. Presently I have 2x 120GB Vertex in RAID-0 and 2x 32GB X25-E in RAID-0. I'm just tired of shuffling stuff around.

SSDs - State of the Product?

My guess would be either: 1) They don't have the production capacity to move everything to the new process 2) The X25-E is an "enterprise" part and needs more testing I would lean towards #2, as it would make more sense to move their higher-margin parts to the new tech first and help justify...

    Hard Disk for Thinkpad R51

Unless you have done a clean re-install, that would be first on my list. An SSD has given more than one older laptop a new lease on life, but I wouldn't go lower than the Vertex...the 'lag' issues can get pretty unbearable.

SSDs - State of the Product?

None of the drives mentioned are anywhere near risking this. They seem to have these issues resolved with the new controllers. The Vertex actually outperforms the Intel under certain workloads, so it does depend.

    Affordable graphics cards

I used nothing but nVidia for the last 3 years or so, but recently was driven to ATI by nVidia's refusal to allow mirroring of the HDMI and DVI ports at 1920x1080; it just doesn't work. So I bought 2 cards to play with, a fanless 4350 and a more gutsy 4850. I was planning on swapping them out...

I used to search for items that were misspelled (primarily magic cards). I stopped buying cars online when everyone started with hidden "reserve" numbers instead of just starting the bidding at what you will accept. That is a bogus practice IMHO.

It is the receiver from this system. Really nice, but I now need HDMI. I'm planning on keeping the speakers and using them with an Onkyo TX-SR607. No idea what it is worth, really. I've just been using the SPDIF input and that is it. Remote (no visible wear) is included.
