AFAIK around here Proposition 13 prevents them from going up, and you can request a re-appraisal every 5 years if you think it should go down.

You had your property re-appraised? We certainly plan on doing a fixed mortgage (20 year if we can manage it comfortably, better rates).

    1000baseSX

The last time I played with 1000baseSX was just for the uplinks between switches, and the Cisco adapters cost triple that.

We are currently renting at half what the mortgage payment will likely be. I'll have to look into the tax situation.

    Household bookkeeping

Pradeep, While I'm aware of the added costs of taxes, financing, and maintenance, saying that buying vs. renting isn't financially advantageous seems a bit pessimistic. I agree that we aren't at bottom, our company's outlook for next year is that it will be worse than this one. One of the...

Thanks Will. Did you write that macro yourself? I know nothing of that stuff, which probably explains why I keep breaking it. I'll figure out the obvious mistakes on my part before asking you to clarify the less obvious stuff.

    Netbook for the wife

Because it really makes a difference. Boot and app load times are night/day. I would rather have a netbook with a fast SSD and 2GB of RAM than a $2k laptop with 7200RPM drive for day to day stuff (everything but games and photo editing).

    Household bookkeeping

Thanks guys. It looks like Excel is the winner. Does anyone care to submit a sample spreadsheet? I've never done bookkeeping of any kind, and am curious to see what people are including in theirs. We are planning on getting a house that is about 40% under what we are pre-approved for, but...

    Household bookkeeping

Up to now, we haven't worried about it at all. Income has been more than expenditures by a wide enough margin that it was a non-issue. Now the market is such that we can finally afford to buy a house...we think. I would feel much more comfortable if we actually kept track for a while. Some...

SSDs - State of the Product?

I have. And I see similar numbers. Is there a particular test you would like run? I can do X25-Es and Vertex drives over the weekend. I'm out of X25-Ms at the moment (waiting for the high-capacity G2s).
  23. ddrueding

SSDs - State of the Product?

No, if you are talking about small files the G2 is much faster. If you are talking about large files (STR) than it is much slower. Intel X-25M Avg Read = 229.8 Avg Write = 77.6 OCZ Vertex Avg Read = 223.1 Avg Write = 199.2

My new quad core Phenom II 3GHz cost me 92$

Has anyone here had a CPU die on its own? I've had a MB or PSU fail and take the CPU with it, and I've had a failure of the CPU cooling system cook it, but I've never had the CPU fail independently.

My new quad core Phenom II 3GHz cost me 92$

I've sold OC'd machines before. I only guaranteed them for stock speeds, but I would OC and test them upon request. I never shipped a non-stable OC, and it never bit me. The last dual-CPU machine I had (before the new dual-Xeon) was a dual 300a @ 450 with the slotkit "magic fingers" things.

    1. Make sure you have the latest display driver 2. Make sure you have the latest flash player I'm having issues playing any 1080p content on my Q6600 with new ATI card, but the i7 with 250GTX works fine. Perhaps the newest ATI drivers are to blame?

1999? 19? ~32 days total, starting from Pokhara and ending not too far away from there (got a lift on a tractor the last bit). In town, the elevation was only around 800m (~2,500ft), but we did manage to get up to 6,800m (22,000 ft) near some peak. I wrote about it at SR at the time.
