Grado headphones. I've heard that they are good, so I decided to pick up a pair with my last order from B&H. The only one they carry is the iGrado, their low-end, but it has the same driver as the next one up. Conclusion? These are the best headphones I've ever heard, but they have the...

    8-port hardware raid

The extra memory isn't necessary at all, just gives a few percentage points improvement in certain circumstances. The battery allows you to cache writes and reads safely. If your data isn't exceptionally valuable, or you can deal with the performance penalty of not caching your writes, you don't...

    Printers: Fast 1-page documents

Phase 2 needs to be put to use immediately. It is the results of phase 1 grouped by person. It allows the workers to organize the prizes by person, speeding checkout and providing totals.

    Printers: Fast 1-page documents

The software being used (out of my control) only supports normal printers, and prints out of Windows. One of the options I have is to have multiple smaller printers or fewer larger ones. Bringing in a beast is very tempting, but the single point of failure freaks me out. Printer pooling...

    Printers: Fast 1-page documents

Thanks again. There will actually be three distinct phases. 1. Silent auction/check-in At this point papers are already out for each item, so we are just keying people into the system as they come in. 2. Item entry, redistribution. All the papers are brought in, with the winners entered...

    Better Monitor

It seems like you (and they) are pushing the tech so hard that the expectations (and price) are leaving reality. If you need the best, than I don't doubt that that is it. But I'm certain you can get within 1% of that for 50% the money.

I do want to buy a used car

:p Yup. Though she refuses to claim ownership of something so expensive. The longer I wait, the larger my car budget gets. At some point, the amount I can spend will intersect with a car that I want. Seems to currently sit in the ~$30k range. That'll be another 6 months. Of course, by then, the...

Thanks for the bits so far. Now that I've met with them, I have a more complete write-up. This will be for a dinner auction. All night I'll be printing one and two page receipts, and at two different times I'll be running 300+ page reports. I'll need to carry the hardware in and out by hand, so...

    Netbook for the wife

You know what my main rig is, so you know what my standards are. I'm telling you, it isn't the CPU, it's the crappy drive and lack of RAM that kill the performance. I have a batch of three MSI U100s coming in, I'll try to put together a side-by-side comparison.

    Netbook for the wife

I really have no idea what you are talking about here. Firefox+Adblock+XP is just as usable on my U123 as on my desktop. Going full screen is all it takes to make any site I go to useable, including the casul collective (complex flash-based games) and youtube/ted.

SATA controllers come free with every motherboard. You shouldn't have to pay for either. SAS controllers are even more expensive than SATA controllers.

Phone thread: What phones are you using, and with what plans?

Nope. Big hands, big-ish fingers. The keyboard does really well, even if you slightly depress the buttons around the one you want. Even if you aren't writing an e-mail, listening to voicemail and being able to next/delete without taking the phone from your ear is useful.

I'm not saying that you're wrong, just observing that you are a bit more towards the tinfoil side of the equation than average, and that Greg likely doesn't have state secrets on his drives...

One of my MSI U123s has developed a flaky/failing video issue. My guess would be an overheating northbridge. I went to support and they told me to go here. This looks like it could be problematic.

Don't worry about the virtualization, it is future-proofing, and if you already have the CPU, you don't need to sweat it. Make sure the SATA ports are set to AHCI or RAID mode, then it should support hot-swapping. In IDE mode you can't.

    Wireless

I don't like them. The batteries run out quite often on the mice, though the keyboards are fine on that front. The main issue I have is lag. If you haven't typed anything in a minute or so, it goes to sleep, and the next key you press takes a LONG time to take effect. Bluetooth devices in...
