    Having a baby!

Congratulations! My sister had hers last week, and our best friends had theirs two weeks ago. As a matter of fact, about 7 (70%?) of our friends have had kids in the last year.

We were, but what I want isn't in our budget at the moment. My wife is also reluctant to commit so much money to something that doesn't exist. I'm hoping to calm her fears by vaulting the main room in the new house and replace the kitchen myself.

Got to play with a Porsche Panamera Turbo today in Carmel-By-The-Sea. The exterior is undoubtedly Porsche, but it is a huge car. The interior is the best I have ever seen in any car, including Bently and Maybach.

This is my fourth ;) Bad teeth run in the family, something about my saliva being incompatible with the enamel on my teeth. My wife was awesome, and spent most of the morning looking for a dentist that was open and breaking into the house stash of painkillers.

    Netbook for the wife

Yup, that'll slideshow it. Though, to be fair, it also takes 10%+ of my 4Ghz i7 and that is way higher than the resolution of the screen. It does manage the 720p with about 85% CPU utilization and 2 instances of skipping.

Look, I installed it as well. I evaluated whether it is worth it, and decided that it is. But that doesn't mean that you aren't giving up more freedom and information and control than you should have to. It doesn't mean that they aren't evil, just as DRMed music (and therefore iTunes and all...

How about this? Where do you tell Steam not to use all your bandwidth? There is a drop-down for what speed your internet connection is, but even if you specify 56k, if will use more if you have it. I understand that it operates at a lower priority, and surfing on that machine won't be affected...

Yes, they are. I've never owned a console, but now that they are internet-attached agents of their manufacturers, I certainly won't.

Steam is the devil. If you sell your soul (agree to them knowing everything about every game, and requiring their permission to play), then you get cheap games and a convenient delivery package. I have an account, but I only install it on new systems out of weakness.

SAS: CARDS, ETC. WORTH THE MONEY?

Lunar, what are you doing that is allowing you to even notice the difference? I can find it with a stopwatch, but when I went from a RAID-0 of X25-E to X25-M to Vertex and back I couldn't tell.

SSDs - State of the Product?

Meh. They didn't include the most important test (4k random write). I don't think it will be that much better than an Intel drive on that. For a while I went from a pair of 120GB Vertex to four, and the performance difference was essentially zero. Maxing out the RAID controller.

133/64 is already depreciated. No one is targeting that market, just as no one is targeting OS9 or 8-tracks. The platform is dead.

SAS: CARDS, ETC. WORTH THE MONEY?

Price, mainly. The Vertex is 97% of the X25-M for most users. I'm not seeing any difference between my two machines (one with a RAID0 of X25-M, the other with Vertex). Instant is instant, and the Vertex is enough to get you there. Availability is another argument, and that you can buy 30GB...

SAS: CARDS, ETC. WORTH THE MONEY?

Greg, The benefits of a SCSI SSD would be exactly zero. None of the advanced features are exclusive to SCSI anymore, and the transfer rates aren't anything to be excited about, either. I'm pretty sure that the future of SSDs is in PCIe direct attached drives. The other part of what I'm saying...

I think a single OCZ Vertex (not to mention the X-25M) would smoke any number of any spinning disk for desktop use. The significance of access time is THAT huge.

    Cheap Color Laser Printer

I suppose it depends on the size of your prints, but I'm certain that not having chips would open the gates to 3rd party ink suppliers, which would drop their cost massively. And why can't the printer know how much of a certain kind of ink has been used since the cartridge was put in?
