    Watercooling

I've been considering those for a while, but I don't think I need anything so complex. Just a waterblock mounted to the top of the DIMMs, pulling away heat eventually, would suffice. I've been told that Danger Den will be coming out with something simpler.

    Eyefinity + Crossfire questions.

I agree, B3. Of course, swapping around cards is particularly difficult when running a watercooling rig. But changing slots is certainly the right place to start.

Great to see you back, Flagreen! I wish I knew someone who was competent at the controls. As it is, every mistake is a crash, and that becomes very time consuming in repairs. Very frustrating as well, which slows the rebuild, which slows the learning curve.

    Watercooling

That would be it. Specifically the controller on the LSI RAID card; it was around 80C without direct airflow. It never crashed, but I like to treat my data better than that. At the moment, the only thing in the 80C range is the RAM, with the portion of the chipset furthest from the waterblock...

Televisions as monitors: What are you using, and why?

I had hesitated about the active adapters before, as I had issues with the first one I got. The new one seems to be working well, though (one day and counting, fingers crossed). That is a heck of a deal Coug, perhaps it is almost time to pull the trigger on that.

    Eyefinity + Crossfire questions.

They shipped crossfire cables with the cards, and the cards still have the "fingers" on top for the connection, so I do have them cabled together. Even if they weren't, I would expect to see both cards in device manager (I'm not). That is what makes me think that this slot combination is...

    Eyefinity + Crossfire questions.

Just tried out Eyefinity. Pretty cool, though the fact that all my monitors are different sizes hurts the effect. Even without the CrossFireX working, 5760x1080 is perfectly playable in Dirt2 and Portal with everything maxed.

Televisions as monitors: What are you using, and why?

Due to the Eyefinity Displayport limitation, I'm looking for ~40" LCDs that support Displayport in. Bonus points if it supports 120Hz, is LED, and costs around $1k. Thanks for any help!

    Watercooling

The loop now includes 5 waterblocks, and the outgoing temp is still nearly the same as the incoming. 1/2"ID tubing with this flowrate is ridiculous overkill ;) CPU->NB->5870#1->5870#2->SSD->Pump->Radiator

    Eyefinity + Crossfire questions.

Issues: 1. Even on the 6-monitor Eyefinity cards, ATI were cheap bastards and only included 2 timing chips. That means that the rest of your monitors need to have active adapters or support Displayport directly. 2. The system won't detect my second 5870 at all. Due to the complexities of...

Yup. Take a look at this one. The chipset heatsink covers the two 1x PCIe at the end, but all the full-size slots are still available.

Most Home Broadband Users Don't Know Their Speed

Yes. All consumer-grade internet service is asymmetric; significantly more download than up. The two main reasons are that normal end-user stuff fits that profile and that download is much cheaper; the ISP can cache most of it locally.
  20. ddrueding

    When to Build New System

On this one you don't lose a slot to the heatsink, it is next to slot one. This is the best board, but it is huge. You will have very few choices when it comes to cases, which is why I decided to go without.

    Cheap unlocked processors?

Read about that on Slashdot about a week ago. They are trying to compete with AMD "Black" series processors (which are also unlocked). Of course, no guarantees what you can do with them (depending on yields), and 1156 doesn't support triple-channel RAM.

    When to Build New System

In that way you are correct about chipsets being inefficient; they don't have all the on idle power saving capabilities that CPUs do. If the system is idle most of the time, it is possible the chipset will produce more heat than the CPU.

    When to Build New System

Yup. Once I stick in the two 5870s, the OCZ Z-Drive, The X-Fi Forte 7.1, and the Intel Pro/1000PT dual-port, I'm out of slots ;) That was actually the deciding factor in not putting the system in a case, but mounting it to the wall instead.

    Eyefinity + Crossfire questions.

I had a Sapphire 5870 Standard, and now I have a Sapphire 5870 Eyefinity 6 to go with it. I'm hoping to pair them up in crossfire, and drive three monitors in eyefinity. When to Build New System

Not really inefficient, but the cooling on most chipsets is inadequate IMHO. A modern CPU draws ~100W and has a giant heatsink with a large fan on it. The chipset has to disperse 20-40W and all it gets is a little heatsink that hopes to get some spare airflow from somewhere else? Some chipsets...

    When to Build New System

The CPU wasn't really the culprit; the motherboard chipset was running much hotter. My new motherboard (X58A-UD9) has even more chips to support the extra PCIe lanes, so there is more heat.

    When to Build New System

Depends on the airflow in your case. If you have significant airflow, no. If you have really low airflow and are overclocking/overvolting, yes. If you have no airflow at all and are overclocking/overvolting (like me) then you also need to use the built-in waterblock.

Most users shouldn't have to, really. Once it is fast enough to stream your video in real time, that is all you need at home. I don't understand what you mean when you say unsupported. VMWare will install ANY OS, even ones it has never heard of. It doesn't need to know anything about the OS for the fundamentals to work just fine. What steps are you taking when you get this error?
