If you were to buy a laptop: brand?

We discussed this in an earlier thread where I complained that I'm half blind now from using a Stinkpad with a 14.1" LCD that runs at 1400x1050. Large fonts look really crummy, Merc. It wasn't a viable option on my m/c anyway.

    Blizzard

WRT Tannin's and jtr1962's posts, maybe I'm a pessimist in this regard, but I honestly don't see that anything significant will be done until it's too late. I say this because it's not enough for some people or some nations to get their act together; the entire planet has to agree and act on...

    Thanks Merc: Speeze CPU cooler

I'm using the HSFs that came with a couple of retail P3-800s I bought circa 12/2000 (awright, cut out the laughing now). Anybody know where I can find the specs of these HSFs so I can compare them with the Speezes? If I can get better/same cooling for lower noise I'll switch. Thanks.

    CHEAP scanner advice

If you use Win XP, I believe the built-in Twain driver is pretty good; you may not even have to install any Epson crap. I'm not sure, though.

    Cascading IE favorites

Actually, Merc, that's only partly right. Leaving aside the Links toolbar sort issue, you can drag and drop single entries anywhere you want, and they'll stay that way till something does get FUd up. That's what I've done. I do have some with nn- preceding them, forcing a sort order, but this...

    Cascading IE favorites

mangyDOG, I just set up my links toolbar. Interesting thing is that IE insists on alphabetizing the contents of each folder in the links bar. I even turned on favorites to show on the side and rearranged the contents of the links folder, but the drop downs from the links toolbar will not show...

Blake: Nope & Yup. I didn't know the address bar could share the space with the menu bar - thanks for that tip! I was already using small icons with selective text, and had added some extra icons by customizing the toolbar.

    Cascading IE favorites

Oops! I clean forgot to mention that I do not have the favs. column on the side of the browser; I need all the screen real estate I can get. Instead, I use the pull down off the Favorites menu. Good suggestion, mangyDOG. I'll have to see how much of my limited screen will disappear when I try...

    Cascading IE favorites

How can I make IE cascade favorites? I've got a gazillion bookmarks and I hate having to scroll up and down (yes, 98% of the favs are already in folders). IMHO, Netscape's bookmark management was infinitely superior. For reasons mentioned elsewhere (the browser you use thread), I'm sticking with...

How many of these things can you remember?

I'm having difficulty remembering (too old ), Studebakers were notorius for something, weren't they? Failing gearboxes, I think. IIRC, chronic gearbox problems tarnished the company's otherwise stellar reputation and killed 'em off.

Office 97 slow to close documents

I was once asked to solve a similar problem; Win 98 + Office97. Word would take ~8 minutes to print each page (text only, single font Times New Roman, plain vanilla two page letter). No matter what I did, I couldn't fix it. Searching M$ and the Web didn't help. Finally I uninstalled Office...

If you were to buy a laptop: brand?

I've owned an IBM T23 for 18 months, and coudn't be happier. Overall build quality, fit and finish are top-notch. A month ago I advised a small business owner to purchase a Dell Latitude C640. While it serves the purpose, I'm disappointed with the design (cannot swap optical drive while...

Poor form: HP commercial still running

You make a valid point. I believe after investigation it was found that a series of small errors both on the ground and in the air was the cause of the problem. More than anything else, the press needs to get their facts right; then of course, they need to be sensitive to the situation.

HUGE price drop on some Samsung and NEC monitors

Discfarm, Fortunately, my Stinkpad does not have the "eraser-screen" problem; maybe they fixed it on my model (it's 1.5 years old). Other than the too-high-rez-for-screen-size problem, it's a pretty darn good m/c. I bought it because it was one of the first noteooks to support 1GB Ram. I was...
