    What to do now?

First of all, thank you very much, i. I really mean that. i had very good suggestions, as had Merc. My initial feel was Law as well. Unlike Merc, I happen to think that there's always a need for ethical lawyers who are decent human beings as well. But then I don't know enough about you to say...

    How do people meet people?

Straight to the point, hairy-one. We've been trying to tell Merc that for years, but in a not-so-pointed way. Really, you need to make a drastic change like that, Merc. Think of it like clothes; when you've been working in the yard and they get dirty you change, don't you? When the current...

    Suggestions for a new avatar

I am not my eyeball! What about the rest of me? Who do they belong to? Who do they represent? The reason I requested i to change his/her avatar is because it feels like he/she is staring. And staring is rude, is it not? It also feels like somebody's going to slice the eye any minute (that's my...

    new in Office 2003

Correction! I'm so old I'd forgotten! I actually learned on Wordstar, Calcstar & CP/M! Started out with the dinner-plate sized 8" floppies, then graduated to the itty-bitty 5.25" ones. At the time, there was a company here in the U.S. that made dedicated word-processing machines. Basically...

    new in Office 2003

VoidPoifect, eh? Hmmmm... I learnt word processing on it. Dos 2.x perhaps, CGA monitor, either 8088 or 80286. WP 4.2. Then 5.1. Then 6.0 for Win. Then 6.1. Then ... you get the idea. It was my staple wordproc till Word (Office) 97 was released. At that time I split 50-50 between the two. With...

Chevy Cavalier 2004 (or 2003) : good car?

I read in the L.A. Times a few days ago that an all new Cavalier would be out next year (2004). This was an article, not an advt. So looks like youy need to find a way to wait for a year, Coug, either for the Prius or something better than what's available today.

    Need Bootvis.exe

Optimizes the boot process to minimize boot time. Works only with Win XP. As it is, XP boots a lot faster than W2k. When you bootvis it, you shave more seconds off. YMMV - for some the savings is 5 seconds, for some 15. In my case, I was setting up a notebook, with an already slow disk drive...

    Need Bootvis.exe

Naw, I wanted the old version. I run 2k, not XP, but am setting up an XP notebook for a relative. I realized I didn't have bootvis; never needed it till now. There were apparently issues with P4-Hyperthreading and bootvis, so MS pulled it and released a new version. Then They pullled that...

Halp - can't find it anywhere. MS has pulled it off their site. It'll be used on an AMD system, so no worries about the reasons MS pulled it (P4 Hyperthreading issues). PM as an attachment if it'll be more convenient. Thanks!

    Only in America ...

I vaguely remember this incident. IIRC, here's what happened. The victim was a jewellery store that was repeatedly burgled. From the MO, it looked like it was the same burglar. Tired of this, the owner rigged up a live wire inside the store, with warning signs outside. The burglar broke-in, was...

The new version of DriveImage (2003?) apparently can image the Windows partition from within Windows while Windows is running. There's an easily found thread on SR about it. But genereal impression is that people don't like it compared to DI 2002, and that it is very slow.

Chevy Cavalier 2004 (or 2003) : good car?

Reminds me of the good old (yes, I'm that old) days of AC vs DC. Edison promoted DC and had cables (that transmitted DC) buried at a shallow depth in the sides of the streets. Many a horse got electrocuted when it rained. Would this be a problem these days as well, jtr?

    How do people meet people?

Growth is not possible without change. Change is often times painful. So is growth (that's why they call it "growing pains"). An absence of change (flow) leads to stagnation (cesspool). No pain, no gain. All very worn, corny stuff, but true nevertheless. Sometimes we take life and ourselves...

Anytime the issue of a dual-proc system comes up, there seems to be much gnashing of teeth. Even if every program one runs is SMP-unaware, is there not a benefit to having a second CPU? A CPU eating program like Santilli's possessed Photoshop can hog one processor, and the OS and all other...

Thanks a million, Merc. Amazon has the Linksys WRT54G (interoperable with B) for $57 after rebate; should I jump for it? IIRC, WEP is the newer, better security protocol, right, with WPA being the wimpy one? Yes, all notebooks are running Win XP. So you think keeping the wireless router at...
