    RIP Anabelle

The R.A.T. 9 is wireless. I dislike wireless, it isn't fast enough, is too heavy, and worrying about batteries sucks.

    Cool system build

I suspect he means OCing more than the multiplier.

    Cool system build

An excellent point. I'd forgotten than this system was OC'd. I'll try again later on.

    Cool system build

Interesting note. I've been using this system as my main office rig since it was built without issue. Today I swapped the 4x 2GB Kingston modules for 4x 4GB Corsair. BIOS detected it fine, but upon startup it immediately corrupted the drive. Swapping back to the other RAM and a bunch of...

    Board games and card games

Indeed, things are very different now than when I started. I remember buying boxes of packs, opening them all one after the next, and sorting all the cards. Now I have a decent organization of my existing stock, and buy singles online as needed.

    RIP Anabelle

Got a R.A.T. 7 today and after about 5 minutes of customization, it beats the pants off my Razer Copperhead. So much more comfortable, so much more accurate. It looks like it exploded, but it feels awesome.

    Board games and card games

Getting ready for a MtG booster draft/tournament with a few friends in San Jose. Just sorting through the cards I have to build some new decks is quite a project.

    When to Build New System

I would certainly do 3x4 to allow more RAM later. Why not go to 24GB now?

    When to Build New System

A likely better choice. I'm just on an Intel kick recently, after having an issue with a Gigabyte board. They are still head and shoulders above the rest, though (I'm looking at you, ASUS).

    Injecting network latency for testing

In theory, you could also just add the route to the linux box, and double the delay.

    Injecting network latency for testing

Can you put the Blade and the Linux server on two different networks, connected by a third PC that has two network cards, and have this machine run WANem? That way it isn't an obfuscated route, it really is the fastest way across.

    Easy Folding setup

Used this, got it working. Now the questions are: 1) Can I just copy this folder to other computers and run it? 2) Is there an easy way to get this configuration to run automatically and silently in the background?

    Something Random

In my new house, the city's main fire station (#1) is 3 miles away and the hydrant is in front of my house, on the property line. I'm fine with that, it essentially makes the annual fee an insurance policy.

    Something Random

What if the fire department, no longer seeing any money from the rural areas, decided to stop offering the subscription service altogether? What if, instead, they simply had a $20k fee to make house calls outside their area? Money up front, if you please. The fire department is a business with...

    HTPC build

I haven't built an HTPC with specialty capture gear in years, though I will have to soon. The integrated graphics are alright, but nothing exceptional. It can handle Civ5 on lower settings, but I wouldn't go FPS on it.
  22. ddrueding

    Something Random

I don't actually see a problem with it. They were free to not only pay the $75, but had the choice to secure against it using other means as well (sprinkler system in the house, large water tank on the property, etc).

SSDs - State of the Product?

Indeed. I do have some X25-M, -M(G2), and -E drives, but most of my SSDs are OCZ. Vertex and their PCIe variants. I have no performance issues, so will not be updating the firmware.
  24. ddrueding

SSDs - State of the Product?

I didn't mean that you had chosen an outlier, but that your drive (and it's poor reliaility) is not representative of the drives in general. Just bad luck.

    When to Build New System

Yeah, not worth it. How often do you calibrate your screen? Will you be able to get the same quality display using an external calibration device?
  26. ddrueding

SSDs - State of the Product?

I must assume you have an outlier there Lunar. I have lots of SSDs doing stuff, some of it very demanding (Oracle databases, Citrix servers, VM Datastores, firewall cache, my gaming machine). So far no errors, no data loss.

    When to Build New System

In my experience, nothing is more important than the monitor, keyboard, and mouse (in that order). After that, any good SSD, lots'o'RAM, and a good CPU.

    WMA to MP3

Format Factory worked flawlessly. Clicked the "all to MP3" button, pointed at the root, and checked the "process tree" box. Overnight it handled the whole thing, cleanly erroring on the non-music files and continuing with the good ones.

    Cool system build

Much like the P190, 99% of the machines in this chassis will not require this chassis. This machine has it because I have a client with interesting tastes and a healthy budget. His last system was in a P190 and didn't have any expansion cards at all and an SSD.

    Cases

Noise level depends very much on component choices, as there is no attenuation at all. The case fans all have speed control, and at minimum are nearly inaudible. My choice of hard drive is also silent, but my GPU makes just a bit of noise. Going to a fanless GPU would be excellent in this...

Yeah, ten might be too much. I was more worried about incompatibilities between lenses and bodies. But I suppose with that many bodies you just leave them on the cameras?

I got the black/blue version. Much less obnoxious, but it still has the LEDs. All the internal components (MB, GPU, PSU, SSD) are blue/black as well.
