I've only once tried to build a quiet rackmount system, and failed quite badly. They just aren't set up for it. Those drive enclosures take a 92mm fan swap really well.

For cheap servers, where I just need a computer in a rackmount chassis, I use this one. It has 6 5.25" bays in it. Having 20 2.5" SSDs and 4 2.5" HDDs for backup would be a pretty potent VM storage array.

Just ordered three from futurepowerpc (the only company that had them in stock and no ordering limit) and one from Newegg with a 3Ware 9650SE RAID card. We'll take a look at compatibility issues when it gets here.

That looks very promising. Considering it is sending characters to a dot-matrix printer, it shouldn't need much. And turning down the baud rate might be an option in that OS.

Do you happen to have a link to bulk parallel cable? Perhaps something more intelligent that could get by with less wires? Edit: I really don't want to solder pins if I can help it.

The computer is not windows/unix/anything I could work with. It is an ancient RTOS that can't be negotiated with. Anything that can take the output of it's LPT port and get it to the Centronics port on the back of the Okidata exactly as transmitted is acceptable, but it needs to be transparent...

I have an old industrial computer that needs to print to an old Okidata 320. Both need to be parallel/centronics, but the cable needs to be pulled via a tiny 50' conduit. I have shielded/filled/whatever rated CAT5, but I'm looking for the adapters at either end. Help? Please?

AFAIK: To use it as a data drive, any SATA port that properly implements AHCI and any OS that can handle GPT partitions. To boot to it, AHCI and any OS that can boot to a GPT partition (Win7)

Acrobat Reader is easily replaced with the free Foxit Reader. You do need to be careful during installation to opt out of the "offers", or you will end up with crap installed on your machine. The rest I would be interested in as well.

FAH is not playing nicely on any of my systems. Even though it is set to the lowest priority, it still has negative effects on video through MPC-HC, PowerDVD9/10, even youtube video. None of these systems are underpowered, this is a decent example. Is this common?

There really aren't any decent PATA laptops anymore, so designing a modern device for it would be a dead-end. A PATA-SATA converter of some kind would be an interesting device on the market, particularly if it allowed you to connect 1.8" SATA drives in the form factor of a 2.5" PATA drive.

I can put a backup in my server room. Obviously it couldn't be the primary, as it isn't my bandwidth, but a backup would be fine. We have redundant T1s from different carriers, redundant AC units, UPS, and a generator with a week's fuel. The bandwidth isn't much, but it would keep the place...

Too early to draw conclusions, I didn't mess with it too much. Once I have a test system put together I'll screw with it some more. Edit: I haven't actually had any issues with Corsair in the past.

In this case I made sure I wasn't OC'ing the RAM itself; 1333Mhz, and even upped the voltage from the 1.5v printed on the DIMM to 1.65v. Wouldn't even successfully run Scandisk without crashing.

Another interesting observation. I have the MB set to dynamically adjust the CPU fan speed, and it is keeping the CPU at 86C. If I turn up the chassis fans, it slows down the CPU fan. At present it is under 2000RPM.

I'm sure they have better than that already. It wouldn't be too hard to have the hard drive in a copier relocated elsewhere or monitored in real-time by a server somewhere.

I've done a fair bit of overclocking, and I wasn't aware of multipliers. Increasing the uncore frequency directly changed the speed of the RAM.
