That feedback was valuable, Buck, thanks for posting it. I'm no Mr. HawkEye myself, and have often wondered if I could tolerate 1600x1200 on a 20". This kind of real-world feedback is so invaluable. I wonder about the Dell 1905, though.

    Review of Hybrid Lexus RX400H

David, I don't think you're being cynical, I think you're being realistic. I think that's what will happen too, that's why I'm so into alternative enrgies. In a year or two, I'll be spending a lot of my time and efforts into becoming more sef-reliant in every way possible. All the "leaders" -...

Gaming system: does hte CPU matter anymore?

I'm chipping in late, didn't read the links in this post, and am not a gamer. But what I know is that for games, CPU cache size makes little difference. Clock speed is king.

Ditto. Thanks for an absolutely fantastic post, jtr. Very lucid, hits home really hard. Many of the posts I make are with the intention to produce a healthy debate, and I really, really love it when that happens! Hard Drive Drawer / Caddy - what's good?

Thanks, myself and Platform. I multiboot two Windows variants on my main system (have been for ~ 6 years, so I'm not new to the idea). In the past, I've tried multibooting different OSes on my spare machines, and have sometimes had horrendous results. I guess I'll tread a middle path now; buy...

Hard Drive Drawer / Caddy - what's good?

Well, i, the top cover for product in the link you provided is "screw" less, so I'm ruling it out  No bud, I'm not into pr0n. I want to try various OSes (my recent thread in Tech Support ). It'd be a lot easier to swap drives in and out. I have two systems I hardly use and a few smallish...

    Can't install SuSe 9.2

I'm really sorry, time  ! I know this is not a valid excuse, but the system is in a hard to reach place, and I didn't want to mess with it unless I had to. I could have sworn it was the Matrox, and I was dead wrong. I hardly think the ATI Radeon is an obscure card? The NIC is an SMC...

I wiped out SuSe and installed Mandrake 10.1. I'm really, really impressed. It detected everything on the first try. Sees to processors (yea!). Can't install SuSe 9.2

Well, I'm glad to know I'm not the only one. It's installed now, but the display sucks big time. I've got the rez. etc. done, but the display quality is horrid. Sorta like a CGA screen. I can see big gaps between each pixel that makes up a letter. Don't know what the prob is; nosed around...

    Can't install SuSe 9.2

Well, what do you know. As soon as I would make a selection of the installation type, the display would switch from graphic install to console mode. I replaced the video card (I lied, by the way. It was an old Trident PCI) with a first-gen ATI Radeon AGP 32MB. I also made sure the BIOs was...

Thanks for the reply, time. After downloading, I did check the MD5 hashes, matched perfectly. EZ DVD Cremator 7, which is what I have right now for burning, does not seem to have a way to verify that a disc was burned correctly. I did burn two copies (just to be sure), and both copies behave...

    Serial port woes

I've had good experiences with SIIG, bad with SYBA. Koutech seems to be a low-end brand, from what I've seen in stores. If I had to buy one of these, it'd be a SIIG. But $42 seems horrenduously expensive to pay for a serial port card. As time says, these are pretty simple. I've paid ~$15 for a...

I have two drives in my system. All the data is on drive B. I've downloaded, installed and set up SyncBack. Before I shutdown for the night, I just run a script that syncs my data to a backup folder on drive A. I also periodically burn DVD+RWs with the data.
