    Confessions of an Engineering Washout

Oh, I've been known to rant about the people who just want to go out and be dermatologists. But there's only three I that I know of out of about 200 people who have expressed a serious interest in derm. Of course, if they wanted to go into it for the "right" reasons I'd be fine with it.

    Confessions of an Engineering Washout

I think it's mostly well known by now that if you want to make big bucks, medicine is NOT the way to go. Sure, there are a few people in my med school class who I don't think too highly of, but by and large I'd be happy with the majority of them taking care of my mom. Granted, there is some...

    Contact Lenses

Some argue that the small risk of laser surgery is much smaller than the annual risk of eye infections. I'm sure if you look at the Disability-Adjusted Life Years of most eye surgeries vs. infectious risk of contacts for 10 or more years, surgery would win out. But then there are others I've...

    Contact Lenses

I grew up with an optometrist, and am busily entering the medical field. I wear contacts. But I must disagree - some people do both. I have allergies that affect my eyes, and the winters here in Minnesota can really dry my eyes out. So I range from 50/50 to 90/10 (in favor of contacts)...

    Dual Channel U2W-LVD SCSI Controller

Since I no long have any SCSI drives nor plan on getting any in the near future, I thought it was time I sold my trusty Adaptec AHA 3950U2B, a dual channel U2-LVD SCSI controller. I'll also throw in my two 24" 3-station (can connect 2 drives) 68-pin SCSI cables. I'd like $30 for the card and...

Hey Gang, I upgraded my laptop memory and now have a 256 MB stick of Crucial DDR PC266 (2100, CL2.5), and a 256 MB stick of K-byte PC333 (2700) memory unopened. If you'll pay shipping, I'll give you both for $30. Adcadet

    Current video card recommendations

I only need to get two VGA outs, but having a DVI out would be nice. Decently priced is around $200. AGP is a must, passively cooled is nice but not key.

    Current video card recommendations

What do people currently recommend for a decently priced, good quality AGP video card? It will be used for some gaming, and dual monitor output is a must. Good compatibility with all forms of Windows is nice, too. Would I go wrong with an NVIDIA 6600GT? Should I stick with ATi, say an X700...

    Google Maps

I love Google Maps because I can switch between map, satellite, and hybrid modes. I've found it very useful to get an idea of what my destination actually looks like. When I really need to know I typically use Google, Mapquest (which I put onto my PDA), and Yahoo.

Is Linux ready for me yet?

Any thoughts on getting my ATi 8500 to drive two monitors? I'd prefer to be able to have them up and running from day 1. SuSE has had decent video card support in the past, no? Is this still true today? I wouldn't at all mind paying a few bucks for a polished distro if it actually did work...

    Palm Life Drive

What do you guys think of the Palm Life Drive? Don't know if you guys use PDAs much. My palm is nearly required for my school, and I find it very useful for checking email and carrying around files and such. I just saw this, and while it seems cool, I'm not sure how it's much different from...

Is Linux ready for me yet?

In 3 short weeks I will largely get my life back from the moster that is Step 1 of the US Medical Licensing Exam. At that point I will occasionally have time to play with my computer, and won't need Windows for a few select, Windows-only programs. Is it time I give Linux another shot? I...

    Cell Phones

My wife and I are on a 2-year contract which is up here in a few months, and Verizon has their "free phone" deal (basically, $100 off per phone). Are there any cell phones out there that people just love? Or just hate? I'm probably sticking with Verizon, since they seem to have decent...

Cantilevered LCD wall mount, with keyboard tray?

I've seen those used all the time to hang flatpanels in patient rooms in nicer clinics. I've also seen much larger versions designed to hold 4 flat planels in the cath lab (see this for a CRT veersion - http://www.bestuse.com/cath.jpg). Great for when you *really* need a good view of the heart.

    Instant Messaging

hmmm....yeah, my first year of college - 1997 - is when ICQ really started to take off (from what I saw). Funny how fast time has flown. Back then everybody used ICQ and nothing else. And ICQ didn't even have adds. Those were the days.

LCD monitor? Spiffy new keyboard or mouse? Speakers? Nice headphones (love my Senn HD 280s!)? I figure these things tend to last years, and the tech may not be advancing that quickly so they'll be useful for years. Plus, these are the things that let you interface with your computer (unless...

Tool to clean up my HD

Anybody know a good tool to help me get rid of redunant files on my computer - MP3, videos, .docs, .xls, .rm's, etc, etc. I thought way back when the Norton/Symmantec suite included such a tool that would look for similar files with similar names, types, and sizes. Thanks, Adcadet

    SMPT service

Fushigi - I love Snappermail. I had a 60-day trial of the 2.0 beta, and it works great. Now that it's expired, I'm not sure what to do....the version that does IMAP and SSL is $60. I was complaining in the bar area earlier about this.

    Palm Pilot email

why or why is it so hard to find a good, not horribly expensive email client for my Palm? All I really need is a cleint that can do SMTP with SSL. IMAP would be nice, too. Snapper mail is really nice, but I'm not sure I want to spend $60.00 for it. When will there be a Thunderbird port to Palm?

Seagate's 300 GB 10kRPM SCSI Lineup Making Quiet Debut

maybe a stupid question, but one I've been wondering about for a while: why do HD's stick with standards RPMs? New Tecra (Mercutio probably vomits)

And that's why my first car was a Subaru (Impreza), and why my wife's first car was one as well (also an Impreza). While we don't do off roading, we do get large piles of snow thrown on the highway with some regularity here in Minnesota, and when we're unlucky it melts and freezes. AWD is great.
