    Why Windows Causes Stupidity

The other day I stumbled across some guys site which contains a few interesting rants. Among them, is this one. A brief quote: Windows has significantly set back and held back the IT industry, and continues to do so. Windows encourages, rewards, and practically demands stupidity on the part...

Zip vs. RAR vs. 7-Zip - best compression utility

This afternoon I compressed a few other things that I rarely use and wasn't mostly jpgs or other files that were already compressed. For most of those they compressed to ~60% of their original size with WinZip (into .zip) on standard settings.

Zip vs. RAR vs. 7-Zip - best compression utility

I'm going through a bunch of my old files on my mass storage drive, and thinking about comrpessing a good number of them (the important ones are burned to CD and/or backed up on another HD anyway). I stumbled across 7-Zip and thought I'd compare it to WinZip and WinRAR. What is 7-Zip...

    credit score

Credit scores confuse me. As far as I can tell, the actual formula used is proprietary and a huge secret. Since my wife and I are likely to buy a new house and car in the next 1.5-3 years, we'd like to keep our credit rating pristine. My wife lost a few cards today, so we've been...

    SuSE goes free

Anyone remember BeOS? I installed it, loved it, but found very little to do with it back in the day (1998-2000-ish). Looks like it's back...sortof. BeOS rises from the grave, takes the name ZETA

    SuSE goes free

Oh, another issue: - networking. A few years ago Mandrake set up networking without a hitch out of the box; SuSE 10 has not, even after I tried to set it up a little.

    SuSE goes free

I'm a linux newbie and I'm running SuSE 10.0 OSS x64 along with Windows. Depending on what I'm doing, I use either for most things. Issues I've had/fixed: - Dual monitors were not detected out the gate, but the ATi drivers gave me a nice dual-screen without problem - mouting, reading...

    La sVaegas

My wife and I went to Vegas for our 1 year anniversary. We had a good time, but I totally agree about the city being rather disgusting. Glad I went, but I don't particularly ever want to go back. Didn't like New Orleans, either. Seattle was great. San Francisco was good. Washington DC...

    Prefered HTML editor

Just wondering if any of you guys have strong preferences for an HTML editor. For the past few years I've used Macromedia's Dreamweaver, which I like but think is overkill for what I do. I just need basic functionality, and am looking for a simpler alternative. Has anybody used the...

    Streaming MP3 player in Windows

Thanks JKKJ. On my system Foobar 2000 uses 6-7 MB while running, vs 25 for Winamp. I still prefer Winamp, but when I'm just streaming music it's not worth the extra RAM that I'm too cheap to upgrade.

    Streaming MP3 player in Windows

What do people use/like for playing MP3 streams in Windows. In my recent SuSE install I am using Amarok, which does a great job of simply playing streams. In Windows I've used Winamp since the 1.x days, but I fear its getting a bit bloated these days. Thoughts?

    Windows dual boot

I was wrong - Dynamic Disks can be read just fine, at least with my SuSE install. Now the problem is getting a mass storage drive (hdc2) on that Dynamic Disk automagically mounted at boot time, and with permissions to allow everybody (or at least my single user) to read/write/execute everything...

I installed a second copy of Windows on a new HD, then converted the first HD (containing the original Windows) to a Dynamic Disk. Now I can't boot off that old drive through my BIOS like I like to do. I think this happened to me once before, and there was some simple command I could run to...

    Beverages

Just enjoyed a cigar along with some Fonseca Bin 27 port and good conversation with my buddy from college. The port was great (as usual), the cigar kindof sucked, the conversation was good. I generally shy away from brands that use a Cuban name on a non-Cuban cigar (Bolivar, in this case)...

    The perfect notebook

I used to think along the lines of Tannin: a notebook should be fast, powerful, and weight is secondary. Who cares if it's 6 pounds or 8. I'm a big guy, I lug around tons of stuff anyway. Well, then I realized what a difference even a pound makes. For me, small is beautiful. I don't use a...

    OpenOffice 2.0 is out.

Very cool. I always liked the PDF functionality. When emailing my CV I've appreciated that relative inability of others alter it (as opposed to MS Word documents). Last think I want is for some secretary to do something accidently to my CV before printing it out and handing it to the person...

    Flock

Anybody try Flock lately? http://www.flock.com/developer/download/preview/ I'm not yet sure what to think of it. So far it doesn't seem to like my school's blogging system, it thinks by "mail" I mean Thunderbird (I now prefer Gmail), and it relies heavily on del.icio.us, which I haven't gotten...

I've had an Inspiron 8200 for 3+ years now, and used a 600M for the first two years of med school, provided by my employer. The 8200 is so-so quality wise, but I was impressed with the 600M. I beat the daylights out of it for 2-years and it never flinched. Except the powercord did die on it...

    Watch preferences

    Watch preferences

Doctors, at least in academic medicine, tend to be very conservative and appreciate conformity. As such a lowly creature on the totem pole, it is wise for me to try not to be noticed as somebody who stands out from the crowd in how I dress. Thus, while a pocket watch would be a great solution...

Yeah, and by just hitting the center button it does pop up the date and time. And yes, I always have my palm with me on the wards. But it's just a tad easier to glance at my wrist, and a major force of habit as I've been wearing a watch since I was in elementary school.

Good thought. But as long as I'm not on a surgical rotation it's rare that I'd be doing something that requires me to de-jewelery-ize. After March I'll be totally done with stuff in the OR (unless I fall back in love with anesthesiology) and will only have to worry about the sporadic sterile...

Skagen makes some nice watches. Minimialist, clean. I like. Perhaps if I get off my bling kick (large, bulky watches) I'll add a Skagen to my wish list. My current non-digital watch is a Seiko much like this this one, but with a rotating bezel, round hour markers, a plastic strap, and the...

Actually just a single dose of aspirin can screw up clotting for 3-5 days since it irreversibly acetylates cyclo-oxygenase in platelets. Functional restoration requires new platelets, hence 3-5 days (the life of a platelet is about 10 days in most people).

    Contact Lenses

I only need barrier protection (doesn't matter if they can stop a bullet). In surgery I also need a pair that I can cinch...
