People who have Gmail accounts get invitations to hand out. I think that this is a way for Google to keep control of the user growth. I just opened my account, so, I should get some invitations to give out in a week or so.

All software is buggy, slows a computer down, and is unnecessary for a responsible and sensible person. Windows is a prime offender here. If you want to keep your computer free from malware, then leave it in the box!

For the record, I was able to boot to a Knoppix CD and use dd to restore the image. It took almost a whole day to restore the image, but afterwards, we were able to reconstruct the partition table, and it looks like all of the data may be there.

I've had the exact opposite experience. Nvidia seems to have always had the worst drivers -- requiring hacking and finesing; while ATi's drivers have always "just worked" for me.

Perhaps you're using a rather ancient codec. PowerDVD and WinDVD both accelerate on both ATi and Nvidia hardware (presumably others). In fact, ATi now uses the PowerDVD core in its own DVD player. I'm pretty sure that video acceleration is new to DX9, although it may have been optional in DX8.
