hmm.. IBM tools dont work on seagate UDMA modes.. had to download seagate's uata100.exe... either way it didn't help out my situation...

i have a motherboard that is supposed to max out at 256MB (even though it's a 440bx chipset)... it only has 2 SDRAM slots... aparently if you use the right RAM (i remember it has to be registered, dont remember the other requirements) you can put in 256MB sticks for a total of 512MB. Not really...

yup fushigi, regional setttings were the discrepency between my sytem and yours..... that's bad.... because my system is set to English(Canadian) and is customized so measurement and time/date format appear the same as English (US).... you are set to English(US) which is unfortunately diff...

well, i decided to be a wuss and get a .exe to do the job for me.... I am testing this on winXp... but it should be compatible with win2k and XP at the least so that means cmd.exe. Fushigi... on my winXP SP1 system %date% returns "01/29/2003" ... i dont know how yours does any different...

afaik winNT includes system monitoring already through perfmon.... most of these type of utilities (system monitors)use this built in tool. It was designed to have as little impact on the system as possible and from what I can tell, I believe it accomplishes this well.

I want DIN ("breakout") cables on sound cards that support 4 output channels or more. I want optical drives to use the same transfer modes as HDD's (ATA66, 100, 133, S-ATA 150, etc) I want standardized conenctors for the LED, Power, and reset switches on the font of cases to go along w/ ATX...

I've been meaning to get those "squiggle" lights for awhile... 1) energy savings 2) heat production and 3) bulb life are my main motivations.. I currently have 4 40 watt incandecent bulbs in my ceiling fan and I'm sure I could use say 10 to 20 watt flourecents to do the same job.

well, he is clocking it at its extremes (remember that current AMD chips only run at 166mHz maximum)... I also agree that if you want a good, quiet solution you need to work on your case air flow/temps and put on a moderately (probably stock) heatsink/fan combination onto the north bridge...

I didnt mean they doubled the AC frequency we all use in our houses... that has been standard for along time(just as you mentioned). I mean that the early flourecent lights "flickered" 60 times a second and now they do it at 120 flickers a second... is this what you got from my earlier...

I agree with the RAM statement Merc made... more is always better. Infact, I have too many 4MB 72pin sticks, I could send you some for the cost of shipping(make sure you ahve free RAM slots). WinNT 4 and win95 both need atleast 16MB to operate well... win98 needs a math co processor (a 486 DX)...

I notice this sometimes... esp when I'm really far away from the screen... or if you say... have another monitor(maybe even TV) that is close to the monitor you're working on.... now that i have a "better" second monitor I can sync them both to 70hz.. maybe higher... so I think I will...

Am i weird that I dont get headaches or eye strain when I sit infront of a computer for 8+ hours without break? I run my 17" NEC @ 1024x768 @ 60 Hz..... although most people consider 60Hz to be low, the screen doesn't flicker and I don't notice a problem so i just run it at that refresh rate...

I'm glad ghost 7 worked for you... it seems so many people are having problems cloning drives successfully in winNT based OS's.... I THINK what they are forgetting is to 1) copy the MBR (in ghost this equates to copying the drive vs just a partition) and... 2) put the cloned drive in the same...

I'd say that 50C is getting too hot... alot of HDD white papers will say the maximum operating temp and/or ambient temp for the drive... but these figures are often pretty vague and can be misleading about the appropriate environment for your data.... so, I would say 50C is getting too hot, 40...
