    Intermittant site not found

I haven't been able to post a new topic to SF in about 2 days. Every time I try, I'll click Preview or Submit, and then sit there for ages until my browser returns a "Document contains no data" error. Adding comments to pre-existing discussions (like this one) is no problem.

    Network cards

Thanks Handy. I had considered that, but as all the network cards I see these days use tiny surface-mount stuff, I wanted to avoid any manual additions. And besides, I'm surprised that in this age of back-lit, neon-lit, strobe-lit cases that network card manufacturers aren't using an external...

    Network cards

It's Christmas time. I need more blinky lights. Preferably some that do more than just encourage Xmas beer ... err ... cheer. There must be a PCI network card available that includes a couple of connectors on the PCB that allow you to plug in a case-mounted LED or two. That way you could...

    CD-writing software and ... *sigh* ... NT 4.0

I meant to post a follow-up. The Nero software that was bundled with a run-of-the-mill Teac CD-RW drive is working just fine on the NT 4 system. (And just for reference - not that anyone will ever need to know - the Easy CD Creator software I tried freaked out and refused to install.)

Nobel laureate rings energy alarm bell

A question for anyone here: When you come across computer-related products that absolutely suck, do you continue to buy them? A Sony optical drive, for example. Does anyone here that hates them continue to buy them anyway? If not, then why do people still buy into cities where they...

    Good chuckle

My family had a party line, shared with several other homes (I can't remember how many now), back in the early 1980s. And yes, we did live in the middle of nowhere. The family of my best friend was one of the homes that shared with us. They had an especially nosy live-in grandmother who would...

I'm not even sure it clarifies anything for me. Does this mean that, for example, Newegg is lying when it states that a given OEM Seagate hard disk drive comes with a 5 year warranty?

    Dell 2005FPW 20.1-inch Wide Aspect LCD, $679.15

If you're unimpressed with this price, LCDs must have come down in price even more than I thought. Anyone care to guess at an average price for a 20" LCD monitor these days? Wow ... that 2001FP would have been $554! I can't believe that price for a decent 20" LCD. I hope they have another...

Heh. I was just thinking about the people I know who would like to nominate George W. Bush as the dumbest president in the history of the country. At some level I kind of agree. A thought just made me laugh though: what does it say about Kerry if GWB really is the dumbest president in the...

Neat! I've yet to come across a *NIX system that didn't store useful info in /var/log and via dmesg. Is having helpful info stored in /proc/cpuinfo relatively universal? I hope so ... that's going to be useful. Thanks JoJo.

    Folding@Home

Oh, one good thing to know: dmesg's buffer is limited, and some parts of the OS will occasionally continue to send out messages to the system that dmesg picks up on. As a result, if your Linux system has been up for a while, the stuff you're interested in may have been bumped out of the dmesg...

    Folding@Home

"dmesg" should be able to tell you. It prints out the messages produced back when the system booted up. There can be a lot of them, so you might try piping the output from dmesg through "less" (allows you to view text from any source one page at a time), like this: me@nowhere:~$ dmesg | less...
