    Can't install SuSe 9.2

Have you tried telling the installer not to use DMA? I don't know about Suse, but with a Debian install all you would have to do is issue a "boot nodma" command at the boot prompt. As for stuff scrolling too fast to see it, try the "Pause" key. Under Linux that key actually works on occasion...

    Automated paging systems

Those are both good suggestions. If I opt for the "hammer away until somebody turns up" solution, even the cell phone route could become a viable option.

    Automated paging systems

The problem there is that my cell phone emits 3 beeps after an e-mailed message has arrived, and then goes quiet. I need something I can configure to squawk annoyingly for ages and ages until someone does something about it. I guess I should have included that requirement initially, but I...

    Automated paging systems

That would be a lot easier. Perhaps a little less reliable (as it would depend on e-mail service being responsive) though. Text-messaging through my ridiculously cheap cell phone supports sending to/receiving from e-mail addresses, so I hope this is a fairly common option.

It's popular in libraries/colleges/schools/universities/whatever. I didn't use it personally, but others I worked with waaaay back in 2001 were using it in teaching labs to provide software restorations on every restart. They were very pleased with it.

    Free Fax Software?

You didn't save $20 so much as you deprived someone or some company of $20 worth of income. Really, if it was worth installing and cracking, it was worth the $20. If you didn't think it was at least worth $20, you wouldn't have bothered with it.

Pentium Pro motherboard with 200MHz CPU

Oh, just in case anyone cares (hah), it has four 72-pin SIMM slots. It has what appears to be a relatively standard ATX I/O setup at the rear of the board (I have no I/O shield for it though), including 2 USB ports, PS2 keyboard and mouse ports, 2 serial ports, and 1 parallel port.

I tried pasting in a few paragraphs from a book, and it didn't work. Then I tried pasting in 100 lines - each line blank except for the line number - and that did work when I went to Preview. So it definitely seems to be related to the total number of characters I'm trying to post.
