    So, um, where is everyone?

Myself and I (and me too) have a worsening signal to noise ratio these days. It's sad but I think it's stemming mostly from the fact that I've been living in near-total personal isolation for going on 4 years now. I'm also finding that - and this is the part that is scaring me a little - I'm...

Why can't I get the floppy drive to work?

Please forgive the obvious comment, but you did make sure that you reversed the cable connector only at one end, right? If you reverse the connectors at both ends simultaneously you're effectively undoing the fix. I only post this because really the only reason I think anyone is going to come...

Advice du jour: If you're at the dentist for a checkup, and you're going to say something that might offend your dental hygienist - even slightly - make sure you say it after the cleaning, not halfway through. Unless you're a masochist, of course. *sigh*

    Automated paging systems

Thanks again for all the suggestions. :D I just wanted to post an update in case anyone is curious about how this is going. Things will continue to evolve into something a little more durable and professional, but for now... 1. An OpenBSD system here at my home runs 24/7 and runs a Ruby...

    Slow day?

And look! The US Mint offers a bag of two thousand, $1 dollar coins for the low, low price of $2490.00, via their online store! Only $7.95 for shipping! What a deal! If I'm ever in the market for a cheap used car, I'd love to try paying for one with a few of those bags.

    Slow day?

Oh hey, it turns out the B.E.P. has larger photos of the $2 bill here. I'm still chuckling as I try to picture Steve Wozniak handing a bogus photo ID to a Secret Service agent that features Woz as a "Laser Safety Officer". Wearing an eye patch. For the "Department of Defiance." That's a classic.

I don't know if the 2003 series $2 bill was ever decided on or not. mubs, you can at least view some small images of $2 bills at the Bureau of Engraving and Printing's website. And of course, if you're really desperate, you can also buy uncut sheets of $2 bills directly from the B.E.P. Years...

Splash: What are you using for new systems at work?

In case anyone is interested, I checked around to see if the Epson Perfection 3170 scanner is supported by Linux (I don't know if there's some difference between 3170s that include "PHOTO" in their name or not). The answer is: sort of. If you try, be prepared for aggravation, and possibly...

I'm still fuming. RW, it's like you've suddenly revealed here that you're playing the card game of life and you've only got 11 cards in front of you. Good grief, man! There are 52 cards in the deck! You can't play this game if you don't have all the cards! Of course the needs of a marriage...

You must be doing very well financially speaking (from my perspective), e_dawg. In the past I've experienced the fun of paying both Canadian and American taxes. You know what I found? I was paying less tax in Canada, and receiving more from the government for it that was immediately tangible...

Hmm ... that's interesting. I was under the impression that things had changed with LG since my first introduction to their products ... which were, by coincidence, their CRT monitors. Which were, again by coincidence, mostly awful. We used to joke that the LG monitors must actually have been...

    Need suggestion for spam filter

Just yesterday I was thinking about how much I love Mozilla's mail client. I receive spam all the time ... but it just gets silently diverted into the "spam" folders. I never see it unless I look for it. At first you have to flag messages as being spam, and then you have to watch for a few...

I wish I had all the answers. I just wanted to post what I'm seeing so far because, as I mentioned, I know many people are looking at LCDs these days (if they haven't already got one). In fairness, I'd like to highlight the fact that this doesn't appear to be something specific to Dell LCDs...

Well, this was a surprise ... especially as I'm referring to my own Dell 2001FP right in front of me. I have 6 virtual desktops, and tend to keep specific tasks confined to their own desktop. I've had one window open in desktop #2 for nearly a month. I've been developing some software for...

After the spacebar and the shift keys, I find that the Enter key is the "non-character" key I use the most. There is some room for play over in the top right corner of the main portion of the keyboard. For me personally, I'd rather see that space go to a key I use a lot ... namely the Enter...

I don't. Not one bit. I have no sympathy for the guy who got chewed up. From the sounds of it, he was there as an extension of his claim that wild animals make perfectly safe pets and society is wrong to tell him otherwise. Maybe he didn't expect the same message to come from a chimp.

    KVM type question.

There should be technical documents for it on Belkin's website. I had the same concerns about the scroll wheel on my PS/2 mouse before I bought a KVM. Turns out it was no problem. And if you're using USB, I would think the odds of support would be even higher. But Belkin should specify...

This story has turned up in multiple places. Gruesome. Nothing I've read so far has specified the technical details of whether they were ... torn off or ... bitten off. They just said "severed". Just like the guy's foot. *shudder* I think I'm going to go for a walk.

Pradeep, when yours arrives, can you measure the distance from the top of the upper bevel to the bottom of the lower bevel? (And the top of the actual screen to the bottom of the screen if you can.) The Dell website is pretty useless as it only gives the diagonal measurement of the screen, and...

Sorry to hear it's not working out for you Buck. :( The only font issue I ran into was easily fixed by re-running Debian's 'fontconfig' package. I can't remember the technical details now, but it allowed me to switch to a font-rendering system under X that is tailored for LCDs, as opposed...
