winipcfg or ipconfig /renew equivalent under Linux

Mine has a load of sample configurations, but they're all commented out. I've since restarted this system of course, so I'm up and running. It's still frustrating me that I don't know the answer to such a simple question. I'll have to play around with dhclient. Presumably there's some way...

winipcfg or ipconfig /renew equivalent under Linux

I have to say I'm surprised I've never needed to know this before. If I have a Linux system on a network and power it up while the DHCP server is down, how the heck do I later get it to request an IP address once the DHCP server is back up?

Kiddie Game Playing in XP: issues and thoughts

Any chance you could find an old 2nd hand system somewhere to dedicate to this task? You'd have much more ability to experiment that way. You say that these games were written to run on Win 3.1 / 95 / 98. Surely you could find an older system somewhere that you could use as a dedicated system...

Oh well. My vote it is on a cheap and cheerful cron job, launched by the "@reboot" string. Note: Jobs started by the cron demon normally have their console output stored while running, and then the whole output from the app is sent to you as a mail message when the app terminates. You may...

I really think an cron job would be simpler. Easy to change, easy to see, easy to 'nice' it, and easy to run it under your own account. Issue a "man 5 crontab" at the command prompt. Read about "The Eight Special Strings" (sounds like a cheap movie, doesn't it). Instead of the first...

    System locking up on occasion

Tried a memory test? I guess it's a long-shot, but I had a system that would lock up intermittently, but usually some time after the system had been left idle and the screen saver had kicked in. Turned out it was a bad SIMM (that should give you an idea how long ago this was).

Nichia Develops 60 Lumen Per Watt White LED

They often use those kind of lights at the Home Depot, Lowes, and other "warehouse" type stores. I'm sure on some occasions I've been able to feel warmth from them, despite them being waaaaay overhead. I'll be more suspicious about them from now on.

Good point, jtr. I'm glad I'm not the only one who's seen inconsistency on that topic. I've been bounced around by that point of confusion off-and-on throughout my life. Continuing your example, that has long ago conditioned me to say, "this past July," and, "July of last year," in an effort...

    Wither English?

Yes, I guess point #2 under my "than" explanation above is really just a special case that applies only to the phrase "rather than." In a nutshell, if you can't remember that the phrase is always "rather than", then just use the phrase "instead of" instead. :)

Just wait until you wind up with an older model SCSI drive ... one that's missing all its jumpers, and those jumpers turn out to be an impossibly tiny size for which you have no replacements. Not that I'm dealing with that kind of problem right now or anything. Noooo, sir. That would never...
