Tried a memory test? I guess it's a long-shot, but I had a system that would lock up intermittently, but usually some time after the system had been left idle and the screen saver had kicked in. Turned out it was a bad SIMM (that should give you an idea how long ago this was).

Yes, I guess point #2 under my "than" explanation above is really just a special case that applies only to the phrase "rather than." In a nutshell, if you can't remember that the phrase is always "rather than", then just use the phrase "instead of" instead. :)
