I listen to a lot of stuff from the 70s, 80s, and 90s and I'm roughly the same age as you.
Most of the stuff I listen to is from those decades too and I'm older than both of you.

While I agree that Bowie was an influencial artist of the past century, I disagree that he was the most influential. The two most influential were probably Elvis and the Beatles. I don't like both of them, but the former shattered the old standards while the latter group was an early years favorite (mainly Sgt. Pepper's) of most known rock bands' members from the following two decades.

One of the things I love about Marian Hill is that it rewards repeat listening and stands up to intense scrutiny. The best sound system you have at the highest volume settings and it just sounds cleaner. This is not common in this genre.

Her latest track, Marian Hill - Down, is probably the best example of this.

Thanks for sharing that; favorited. These are a few on my favorites from SoundCloud:

Venemy ft. Alexandra - Let Go (SirensCeol Remix)

Au5 - The Rain Deer

3LAU - How You Love Me ft. Bright Lights (Sneo Remix)

Alexa Lusader - White Snow (SirensCeol Remix)

JJD - Mario

Laszlo - Supernova (this will sounds very familiar if you watch Linus Tech Tips videos...Laszlo has other talented pieces that I follow him on SoundCloud and Facebook)
I was listening to your suggestions and got this one automatically after Alexa Lusader. I thought it was worth sharing:

I had to share this interview with Ginger Baker, founder and drummer of the 70's group Cream. Talk about the interview from hell - this is one serious curmudgeon. :)

http://www.rollingstone.com/music/n...olling-stones-are-not-good-musicians-20131011

He and Jack Bruce, the singer/bass player, were famously best enemies. In the hours before Bruce died a couple of years ago, he purportedly phoned Ginger Baker and said, "Ginger, I'm dying. F**k you.", and hung up.

The old CDs had enough bits to keep the noise low, so why record at such a high level and with excessive compression? Are the audio engineers not well trained?

No idea. Clearly there are some no talent hacks involved in the process somewhere.

I have no idea. The last time I did anything like that was around 2000.
Expanding dynamic range isn't that hard to do. Although once it's been mangled to the extent Electronic Opus is it's hard to undo and get a natural sounding result. Removing/undoing heavy clipping is quite hard. I have the Blu-ray audio version on the way to me. Per internet reports it has much better dynamic range on the 5.1 mix. I can mix that down to stereo and that will operation probably gain a bit more more dynamic range. That should beat wasting hours trying to put lipstick on the pig of the CD version.

It's just as cooked and distorted as the CD. They just apparently backed it off by 4.5dB from full scale.

Can you be more specific to the type of music you're fond of and share with the group?

I'm on a Slayer mood these days. Since their best pieces date back to the mid-eighties, I'm pretty much like what an Elvis fan was back in the eighties. I listen to stuff from three decades ago.

Not that being an as-been is a new thing in my life...

Ahhhhhhhh the early/mid 80s. My high school days. Wish I could go back in time knowing what I know now.

What services do you use for steaming music? I want something on the Androids Bluetooth for vehicular and home use.

I subscribe to Spotify as a primary source of general music streaming. I enjoy the variety of the music and also the system they have which offers new music suggestions. I also use SoundCloud for more indie music from some artists I follow. I rarely use Pandora these days because the price isn't worth it to me nor is the amount of time spent listening to commercials along with lack of customizable content.

Then how? Do you do it manually? I want to maintain signal while I sleep so that would be a large amount of content.

You down download music from Spotify that you frequently listen to if you don't want to stream.

I have an iPod loaded with music in my Audi that I listen to. I've been listening to the radio in my Chevy since it lacks any sort of advanced connectivity. I suppose I could put my nice Alpine headunit with time alignment back in the car though which would give me an Auxiliary input as well as MP3 CD playback capability. I'll have to find it though.

I have Pandora, Amazon Music, and Soundcloud for streaming. Audible for books on tape, and DoggCatcher for podcasts.

Amazon is the one I use most, and have a nice collection of songs there. When I want to find something new I use Pandora. Some of the niche stuff is only on SoundCloud.
