The link no longer works for me. Neither does the one on Anadtech's news section.

I guess it means Microsoft pulled the plug on it, probably because they don't want people to bash it publicly with news of security holes (there will be some soon for sure and I don't need a cristal ball to know it) before the official public release scheduled for early next week.

More like Microsoft got wind of so many people hitting a site that was limited to specific customers. Getright failed overnight for me with a
"Not Allowed" error.

I'd bet that people with authorized access to that server can still get it.
Not that it matters much, if even one person (with access to an
FTP or P2P network) got the whole thing downloaded before the
gate closed, then the cat is still out of the bag.

Heck, there were already mirror sites popping up and going down
again all day yesterday. So you know by now there are a few
other places to find it (for those who were not concerned about
going thru official channels anyway).

I'll mention it to some folks I know who have the MSDN subscription,
which might still let them in.

I don't think it's goigng to freeze anything. It just won't install on a machine using a common pirated key.

No big changes at all, just that "questionaire" menu about which browser, E-mail client, VM, and chat client you want to use (I just have to use Sun Java V1.31.04); other than that, a serious number of bug fixes and optimisations.

PS: I've been running Service Pack One for XP since Tuesday -- nothing but smooth sailing since. Actually, I believe my system is indeed about even with Win2K / SP-3 as far as stability goes.

If you mean legit, as in "legal"? Hell no.

Legit as in "does it work as advertised?" I wouldn't know.


They even admit to it being illegal.

Since Windows XP Service Pack 1 leaked its way onto the Internet people have been asking me regularly how to update when they are promoted during installation that they are running an illegal copy of Windows. This guide will explain how to get around this obstacle – Let’s face it, these users are already running an illegal copy of Windows - can further harm really be done?

They're on dangerous ground. IIRC Tweaktown is an Oz site, and we now have our own equivalent to the DMCA, meaning the key changer is illegal.

I'd expect M$ to act against that.

The keychanger is not illegal. You can change a setting in the Registry yourself, to enable youu to get to the Activate WinXP screen. The keychanger merely automates this change for you. Now what may be illegal is the distibution of those non-blacklisted keys.

WXP SP1 is now available through Windows Update. It does an Express download of just the stuff you haven't already applied. Which is nice as it reduced that 135MB download to about 36MB for me.

Even on the corporate 6MB connection though, I'm only getting about 20ishKB/sec.

Sorry Fushi, but I have to say it : I downloaded the SP1's full 133MB at over 300KB/s last night. It took less than 10 minutes. Don't worry, Mercutio is probably more jealous than you are.

I don't even have WinXP here, but I plan to make Installation CD of it with the SP1 already included as soon as I start selling systems with that OS (I would prefer to stick to Win2K, but popular demand is pushing for the latest version).

No big deal. I caught up on the overnight email while waiting for it to finish downloading.

Interesting note; it seems to contain everything in the IE6 SP as once XP SP1 was installed, I went back to Windows Update for the IE SP but it no longer showed up.

No problems so far. The only difference I've noticed is that SETI Driver no longer shows in the system tray for some reason. It's still loaded & seems to be running fine, but doesn't show up. As to me using SETI & not F@H .. in a couple of months when I finally pass 2500 units I will most likely switch.

I'm having problems with XP SP1. Specificly I'm getting the Explorer process going to 100%. It does not occur immediately after boot, but rather may occur hours later. After that the machine becomes very sluggish. I'm going to unistall SP1 and see if that helps.

I uninstalled the SP and it didn't solve the problem that was created when I installed it. Me annoyed.

I know this is one of thse "too late" recomendations, but XP's check point system works rather well for instances like this. I've used it to remove norton system works and it worked like a charm. It's helpful to use when you install things likethe service packs or hot fixes IMHO.

Should be even sooner as I've over 2300 units and crunch 4-10 a day.

My crunching started on an Athlon Classic 800MHz, added a Dell notebook PII-400, replaced the Athlon with a T-bird 1.4, and replaced the notebook with a P4M 1.6. The first machines took 10+ hours/unit; the current ones do it in 4 - 5 hours on average. So the 6hr 33min average is slowly going down.

As I write this, I'm ranked 50,224 out of 3,965,438 people, although I think that includes people who are no longer crunching.

4 million users! F@H barely has 65000 at the moment. I'm sticking with F@h. Much better chances to reach the top 100 someday than SETI. Besides, the cause is more important IMO, unless ET really has a magic finger that cures all diseases.

I'm now having a problem with SP1 as well. MS Terminal Services Client no longer works when I try to connect to our W2KSP2 servers. I even re-installed MSTSC but still no dice. No errors reported or anything; just nothing happens when I click connect. This is not the run-in-a-browser client. Leave it to MS to not be compatible with their own products.

On the SETI side of things, I have now just barely cracked the top 50,000.

My W2K SP3 has never missed a beat. It's astonishingly stable. In fact, I don't think I can tell any difference in stability between W2k SP2/SP3 and OS/2 - and if you know me, that is high praise indeed. I simply can't imagine why anyone would want to run XP at any service pack level.

I have a screen capture at work I'll have to post of my two domain controllers. They've been running strong now (with SP2) for 180 days without a reboot or crash.

One of the domain controllers serves as a low usage IIS web/FTP server, and the other one runs SQL Server 2000 and MySQL server. Both have been up for an average of 99.996 this year! I'm going to try and get them to go an entire year... I dunno if they'll make it. That or the power will go out.

Make sure that the Terminal Services service is set to "Automatic" startup.
