Starlink is probably more expensive, depending on your other options, but it is in the same ballpark. Old-school satellite and cell phone-based systems are bankruptcy inducing if used normally.
I doubt any of the major internet infrastructure would survive EMP situations very well, but I'd bet Starlink could get a replacement constellation up before Comcast drove around to every box and swapped a board.

How To Improve My Brain Storage?
I have recently started getting the feeling that there is a need for elected representatives of people, in nations that allow that in a fair way, to start paying closer attention to what is going on in this new world of digital money-making through the sale of such things like operating systems and related tech stuff, and the companies that seem to be providing "free" software/tools and such.
Interestingly, it has only been that last few years where one doesn't get lambasted for writing such like I placed into my first paragraph.
But I'll halt here and see if anyone wishes to discuss this further.

For anyone using a Microsoft 365 subscription, you've probably gotten an Email recently about a change to your subscription price. It's a pretty substantial change, US$30 for the 6 user family plan. Here's the thing: You don't have to buy the family plan. If you have no use for Copilot AI (and I would argue most people don't), it's still possible to get the old pricing, though you have to cancel your current plan to change back to the old one. You can also just do
to install the store. Takes a couple seconds and it's easier than the winget command to remember -- then again, I'm not sure if that winget installs the store or the Terminal you were talking about.

Winget is just winget but once it's installed, it mostly does the same things as chocolatey. Chocolatey is easier to use but it doesn't install Windows components, you you need to know about both.

I'm pretty impressed with Microsoft Power Automate's ability to do stupid, free-form web things.
I used it this morning to scrape and gather URLs, filenames and descriptive information from someone's (adult web service) account and dump them into Excel. (Adult web service) does not provide creators very robust tools to track what they've already put online, so many users resort to using Cloud Services like Dropbox or ask end users to give them an ID number to indicate purchase intent, but it was shockingly easy to record the action to grab all the relevant data and put it in a format my friend could easily interact with.
It saved her from having to look through ~900 individual posts to collect that information and/or saved me from having to write a bunch of Python.

Is everybody here on W11? I'm still on W10. I guess I need to get off my ass one of these days and switch.
My W10 was upgraded free from a Technet W7. MS stopped allowing such W10 installations from upgrading to W11. I'll have to buy a copy of W11 which I don't mind, but am resisting the new install of many progs and a million tweaks and customizations that I'll have to do. I'm dreading have to tweak so much in W11.
I need VMWare Player to run my Epson scanner software. W7 & W10 couldn't directly work with the scanner which I bought in 2004. Y'all know what Broadcom has done. The last full version of Player I was able to download was 17.5.0-22583795. The installed version upgraded itself to 17.5.2 build-23775571, but subsequent versions kept failing to update.
I guess by the time I move to W11, MS will deprecate it and will have moved to W12.

And if you're already not-buying Windows 11, you can use certain enterprise grade versions that come without a lot of the annoying cruft. IoT Enterprise LTSC 2024 is supposedly going to be supported until October of 2034. That said, you could stick with a 10 base and use LTSC 2021, which I believe is supposed to see support until 2031.

As long as you're using the same or new build version than the one that shows up when you run winver.exe, you're doing an in-place upgrade. If that's not working for you, you can probably go to Advanced Troubleshooting under Settings and Reset Windows. That way will make you reinstall applications and won't respect any saved settings you might have, but you CAN choose to keep your files.

Long ago I had created a virtual machine with Technet W7, upgraded to W10, then to W11. It was not activated. I tried the above suggested method and it activated!

I used VMWare Converter to make a VM of my live system. I gave the VM 6 cores out of my 12-core Ryzen 9 5900x; gave it 32 GB. It's unusable. There is so much mouse lag I couldn't even close a window or do anything. Task manager shows less than 3GB RAM consumed, but CPU maxxed out.
Does Microsoft's tool work better? I tired it once but is insisted on creating the VM files inside drive C:. Couldn't figure out how to make it use the partition dedicated for VMs.

My guess is that you have a sparse-allocated VMDK and/or dynamic RAM allocation turned on for your VMware image, but I administer Hyper-V VMs daily and with fully allocated disk space and RAM, you should be seeing basically native performance. VMDK to VHDX is an easy file conversion if you want to try things that way. Four cores is PROBABLY plenty for a VM absent specific need for more than that (gaming, content creation etc). Is your VM sitting on a spinning drive or something?
Also, you can move VM files someplace different. You'll have VM descriptor files (.vmx) and drive image files (.vmdk) and those can be stored separately so long as your Hypervisor knows where they are. Just stop the VM, move the files and tell it where you put them. Are you using VMware workstation or just Player?

Don't know where dynamic RAM allocation is. Can't find anything relevant under Edit VM setting \ Memory.
For Disk, Max Size 320 GB, Current Size 112 GB, System Free 174 GB in Edit VM setting \ Hard Disk SCSI.
Mouse movement is so erratic and jerky it takes 20 mins for me to shut the VM down. Managed to take a screen shot of Tsk Mgr. Disk usage fluctuates between 0% and 95%. CPU Usage is a steady 100% on 6 cores.

If you want something that just works my first thought is to just convert your vmdk file to a vhdx and use Hyper-V.
Beyond that, MAYBE you forgot to enable some hardware virtualization settings in firmware or need to update VMware tools but nothing with 6 cores of Zen3 should be that bad full time.

For purposes of comparison, if I take six cores from my 3960X (Windows Server 2022) and the Arc A770 in it on to a Windows 11 VM, I can play Doom 2016 in WQHD at around 60fps. I'm not sure if the version of VMware you're using handles GPU pass-through but that's what I'd expect from any contemporary hypervisor.

The beast has been slayed. In the VM, the "Install VMWare Tools" was grayed out, so I assumed it was already installed. In fact during the conversion of the live system to a VM, this is a question that is asked and I specifically said Yes. Also my physical DVD drive is connected to a power director and is off 99.99% of the time unless I need it, so the converter did not see it, so the VM did not have an optical drive. Anyway, I added a CD-Rom drive to the VM, and the "Install VMWare Tools" became available, so I installed it. VM is behaving now. Thanks!
In other news I did an in-place upgrade from factory W10 to W11 on my 2021 vintage, hardly used Lenovo cheapo laptop. After ages, I have W11 22H2, build 22621.5472. I thought 23H2 was out a while back and 24H2 is rolling out. Laptop says I am up to date and will not move past 22H2. What am I missing?

There's a registry/GPO you can set to trigger the update but you can also just download a newer ISO and kick off the upgrade from that.

I find that the big updates just don't show up for a while. No matter how many times I "check for updates" the day before travelling, my laptop waits until I'm tethered to my phone in another country before deciding that a massive update actually exists.
