Why is this wireless router so fast?

Hi
I just upgraded to 10 MB/sec internet from astound.
First off, all they did to do that was flash the router from the office, and it's working right around 10 MB/sec.

Now this is the part I don't get. Using a Linksys Cisco-Linksys WRT54GL Wireless-G Broadband Router. It's supposed to be 54 mbps=6.75 MB/sec.

However, testing through a laptop its coming in at nearly 10 MB/sec as well.?

How and why is it functioning at nearly double the spec max?

I'd also be shocked if you got a 10MB/sec internet connection. It's probably 10mbit/sec.

I've always held off on the bleeding edge, but I so liked torrents at 1.3 MB/sec that I decided the 20 bucks extra to get 18 mbps would be worth it.

Just had a programer move in, and, he wants the upload speed. Uploads go over 6 mbps, then drop back down with this new connection.

For some reason the connection to one laptop is in the 16-19 mbps range, and, the computer/HTPC is in the 13 mbps range, single rating low.

See if I can improve the signal a bit.

haha, nope. But the latency was pretty low, probably < 10ms (couple AS hops away, same city).

I tried to sign up for a speedtest.net official mirror (or whatever they call them), and they never called me back. Some of the companies we work with are official speedtest.net mirrors. It's probably a blessing and a curse, I'm not sure I'd really want a million random people "testing" my bandwidth.

We've ran the speedtest mini at several locations for customer use, which is what has lead me to believe that they cannot accurately test > 50Mbps. It might well be a failing of browsers and/or flash as well.

It is actually not all that exceptional around here. When I moved here in late 1999 I had a 10Mbit/s ethernet connection in the apartment. The cost was included in the rent.

Today almost every household in the city have 100MBit/s fiber access straight into the living room. I pay just below $40 for my access. There are no bandwidth limits and no blocked ports or traffic. Quite a lot of the households in the city can choose a 1Gbit/s access for $125.

The downside? It looks like this for way too large parts of the year. Do you see the heap of snow to the right of the window? It is my Weber grill... :-(

The summers are nice, but in general there is only *real* summer from late June/early July to late August. And I still remember the summer of 1998 when we had something like 8 hours of sunshine during the summer. The rest was cloudy and rainy.

I think my English is not good enough to understand the article. What is 'account surplus' and 'currency appreciation'? And I am very skeptical to 'it should open its domestic market to foreign goods'. There are nothing stopping me from importing anything I want, which I regularly do. Quite a lot of stuff is cheaper to buy from USA, England or Germany.

Sorry, the article was ludicrous to any sensible person - I linked it for the irony.

1. Sweden has incredibly fast yet cheap Internet, no doubt government funded. It's bound to boost productivity in the economy.
2. Despite a society that even today many in the US would consider hopelessly socialist, Sweden is a net exporter, i.e. they actually make money.
3. Nutters in the US are crying foul and telling the Swedes they need to export less and import more, cause it's just not fair.

If you are snowed into your house a large portion of the year, availability of heat, electricity, food and internet are really the only things I'd be looking for. I hear that the average lifespan and healthcare in general are also pretty good

Yes, definitely. Ikea is considered to sell stuff of reasonable quality to a really low price. There are several chain of stores that aim for a little better quality at premium prices.
I think most people would feel cheap if they bought everything exclusively from Ikea, even though there is nothing wrong with their furniture. Most people do have at least some stuff from Ikea though.

I actually don't think very much of our internet infrastructure is government funded. There have been some government projects, but mostly to allow people in rural areas to get some internet access. Most of the high speed fiber-to-the-home access is built by companies that saw the business opportunity. For example, where I live there are one company that decided that *everyone* should have fiber drawn into their apartments. In less than a year they had dug up the whole town (110.000 persons), put the fibers in the ground and restored everything. It was probably very expensive but since they did it in such a large scale it was relatively cheap per household. And now they can cash in $40 per household per month for a very looong time. Something similar to what google is building right now.

I have never been to an Ikea.

I think of Sweden as being one of the happiest and most socially liberal nations on Earth. Also, I remember the Swedish Exchange student we had at my high school, whose 1993 yearbook from Umeå had more bare breasts in it than the average issue of Playboy. Which was awesome.

When I think of Sweden I think of Saab cars, Saab fighter jets, Ikea, Volvo and Swedish modern furniture from the 50s and 60s. I think of short summers and long winters in an alpine environment.

And I bet your towns and cities probably didn't sign exclusive agreements with one company locking out all competitors and giving that one single company no motivation to innovate either. ;-)

FWIW, I'm not against having my fingerprints taker per se, I used to hold a poker (gaming, slot) machine clearance license which required that I had my prints taken. But that was a legitimate and voluntary. For a holiday?

There's a lot of places I'd like to see in the U.S.A. Maybe your powers that be might relax a bit given recent events, but governments of any persuasion are very reluctant to give up some power that they have taken for themselves.
