VMware real to virtual and 7b stop errors

Did win7 real to virtual and selected IDE disks and got the 7B/43 error which is pretty much a disk driver far as I can tell. System has ICH9M chipset that I think is set to AHCI but I would have to reboot to be sure. What's the recommended way to handle this?

Install vmware tools before converting to virtual so that the drivers are there?

Found advice that the default IDE mode in the converter doesn't work well so select SCSI/SAS. That worked for me.
