Make a new one. If yours is the same as everyone else's - you're booting C:\windows on the first IDE disk on your system, copy it off another machine.

It's a bit of a pain, but not that hard to replace. The Windows XP recovery console even has a tool to help you fix one.

yeah, I've modified the boot.ini several times.. going back to late 90's with NT 4.0, it's just kind of odd that the file is gone. And that the machine boots.

Seems stupid, but have you verified in "Folder options" - "View" if "hide protected operating system files" is checked or not? It is by default I think.

it's not hidden, i can see all the hidden files.. additionally, i get an error about the boot.ini file being missing if I try to goto the startup/recovery options section of the advanced system properties. The message says the file is missing and says I will not be able to edit or make changes to it... duh....
