Reminds me of the advice to highwaymen in one or other of the Terry Pratchet books. On the Discworld, dwarves are particularly fond of their gold. Pratchet advises you, if you are a highwayman (is that what you call the guy who holds up the stagecoach in the US? Not sure if you use the same word) - advises you never to hold up a party of travelling dwarves with the phrase "your money or your life!" unless you have brought a cut lunch and can spare the time to wait while they talk the options over.
