Seeking suggestions for C++ and Java Books

Just as the title says. No experience with either, but I'm a sponge and have no fear of learning curves. Just want to do it right the first time. TIA.

Dietel & Dietel I'm told this is good but didn;t use it myself.
I also have Bjarne Stroustrup's The C++ Programming Language but as I don't do much C or C++ these days I never got around to reading it.

Then there is if you want to program for windows or unix.
If windows there are some definitive books you should read but they've probably all been rereleased as C# books now.

Thanks for the suggestions Will. I'm not certain of the evironment yet - probably both, but will have to look into it more.
