Sheridan admits the disc is only a research project at present though talks are ongoing with the Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA) about formalising the standard. Public availability? Between two and four years it claims

With notebook HD's already @1/2TB, and minimum of 4yrs before this could be a retail product when lappy HD's should be well over 1TB, and desktop 3.5in drives near 6TB, seems this is not nearly enough!

Author or the article obviously doesn't know anything about the potential for 4k res movies, the Red One camcorder, 4k projection, etc coming soon to HT

There will always be a market for shipping many copies of static data to lots of people cheaply. Granted, online delivery will replace many of the traditional uses, but there are many it won't. What will kill disposable media won't be hard drives, it will be 500GB USB thumbdrives for <$10. That is a ways off yet.
