PC3000 Memory

Does anyone have experience with this stuff? Specifically, I'm considering Kingston HyperX DDR 370MHz - CAS 2.

It seems like a decent compromise for sync'ed FSB and memory on a Nforce2 mobo, not forcing the issue with a 200 MHz FSB.

But what is the standard for this non-standard memory? NewEgg has the category PC3000 (DDR375 188MHz), but within that, OCZ is DDR366, Corsair is 370 MHz, and Mushkin is 366 MHz. None of them in stock, and they don't list the HyperX at all . GoogleGear's got the HyperX 256 MB at $54 and 512 at $102, though.

i'd get the DDR 400... it's an official standard, and you will probably want it later...

running your CPU at 200mHz (effectively 400 with DDR) you'll have a nice synchronous operation...

or.. running your CPU at 166 (effectively 333 w/ DDR) you can make sure you have sync RAM with low cas latency.


btw, intel 845GE boards have a 1.5 CAS setting now...

I'm not quite sold on DDR 400. I want to sync the memory and FSB, and I've heard of a few problems with 200 MHz FSB on the Epox 8RDA+ I'm considering (such as Clocker's). I thought that maybe if I don't quite push it to 200, I might not need to mod the chipset cooling on the mobo. And 183 seems like a decent compromise between 200 and 166.

There's no reason why you can't run DDR 400 at any speed slower than 400MHz, if you want to keep the memory and FSB synced.

From what I read, the nForce2 chipset is faster with DDR333 than with DDR400 if you run you FSB and memory bus sync, so I won't bother with PC3200 on that platform. Apparently, the chipset automatically set back to less agressive timings when the FSB runs above 166MHz DDR.

like I said(or what I meant to convey).. set the timings to fastest as possible at a synced FSB....

so cas2 at 166 w/ 4 way interleaving is probably your best bet.
