Although it doesn't include Doom3 benchmarks, I found this roundup that compares 28 graphics cards to be particularly useful:

http://www.digital-daily.com/video/vga-roundup/

It confirmed what I suspected - the low end belongs to ATI (R9550) and the midrange to nVidia (FX5900XT). And Radeon 9600SE is the first half-decent cheapo card since the MX440.

The other reviews linked in this thread show that for Doom3 at least, nVidia FX6800 has no peer.

Since the FX6800 came out. :)

Seriously, the latest pricing I've seen lists the FX5900XT at 53% of the cost of even a base FX6800. An ATI X800Pro/256MB is a whopping two and a half times more expensive.

BTW, anyone contemplating a Radeon 9550 needs to watch out for the dreaded 64-bit memory syndrome - there's no SE tag to give the game away this time.

For example, Sapphire has both 128 and 64 bit versions but Gigabyte has only 64-bit. :(

There is no danger of me buying a 64-bit Radeon. Or a 13487-bit Radeon. Or any Radeon. :-?

Seriously now, the graphics card universe divides into three parts.

1: Entry-level, in Oz dollars, about $100, typically $70 to $150. Acounts for roughly 85-95% of all sales. Gforce 4MX, Gforce 4000, FX5200 and etc.

2: Mid-range: around $300, typically $250 to $350. Accounts for 5 to 10% of all sales. FX5700 and similar.

3: High end: FX5900 and up. Practically no-one buys them. If you think that's just me, think again. Ask your wholesaler how many they move. Better yet, ask if he has one in stock. You can order 30pcs of FX5200 and they will ship within the hour (because they have 50 or 100 or 1000 in stock), You can order 2 x FX5700 and they will ship within the hour (because they have 5 or 10 or 20 in stock). Order one of anything in the $500+ price range, and you have no more than a 50/50 chnce of getting an immediate shipment — and I'm not talking hole in the corner disributors here, I'm talking good sized wholesalers with 10 or 20 staff of the payroll.

Calling an FX5900 "midrange" is ludicrous.

I think you're just a little out of touch.

The FX5900 Ultra was a high-end card, but as far as I can see it's effectively obsolete (thanks to the 6800). The FX5900XT sells for around $300 and therefore fits your own definition of mid-range.

Most incarnations of the FX5700 are relatively poor value, either too pricey or the (shudder) LE version. A Radeon 9600XT is way faster and the 128-bit 9550 is way cheaper.

Frankly, the only positive thing I can think to say about the FX5200 is that most come with a DVI connector. They stink, particularly the plethora of 64-bit ones that dominate the market. Ask yourself, "Why am I pushing a card that is about half the speed of the cheaper MX440? Why don't I offer the equivalent but cheaper Radeon 9200SE or the far better 9600SE?"

There's absolutely no advantage to the nVidia Detonator unified driver over the ATI Catalyst unified driver. Neither is there any hassle going from one to the other and back again.
