BYE BYE NTFS

Not winfs. I don't know much about that level but it sounds like it isn't a big change, just a big improvement. They admit it won't be appropriate for DB servers too, that doesn't sound good.

Filesystems change in the *Nix world pretty readily.New features for Windows file systems are usually interesting and useful copies of tools other OSes have had for years. This is probably a good thing.

It certainly has some interesting properties, however I did note that it'll lack compression, have no support for hard links and won't be bootable (initially - need to wait for future OS versions for that)?

But ultimately it'll mean that all that disaster recovery software and drive partitioning software you've purchased over the years will all need updates to handle the new storage system...

The article said that while underlying structures would be changing the API would remain compatible with NTFS. That means a lot of programs won't have to change at all to get the same functionality.
