    Converted to Linux

That sums up my experience when people run SELinux enabled OSes. Even though I run Solaris Express (also called SXCE), it has all the Trusted Extensions enabled with SBD enabled, it doesn't take long to elevate your user permissions to allow most common desktop functions, while still...

    Converted to Linux

I find that mplayer (with gui frontend) does everything I need. The one thing I have found is that many distro's don't enable hardware acceleration by default, to be on the safe side. Could always try compiling from source yourself to see if that makes a differencce.

Glad to hear it all went well... :thumbright: If you need any advise on what apps work well as windows replacements, I'm happy to offer suggestions, (considering my main home PC has not run Windows in any form for at 3 yrs now).

    Favourite TV series

I tend to agree... My wife has watched the complete MASH series on DVD at least 9 to 10 times now. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M*A*S*H_%28TV_series%29 ) I also tend to purchase TV Series, more than set movies as well. The TV Series being more character developed also set better as time goes on.

Odd directories on my HP Laptop

They're most likely left over from Windows Updates. (They are the temp folders used by the updates). To delete, boot in safe mode, and attempt to take ownership, apply sane permissions, and delete, etc. If they fails, rip the drive out, insert into a second machine and you should be ok to...

    problem Good summer hiking/backpacking boots

Your current weight should not be a concern when looking at boots/shoes. Getting under performing shoes/boots to save a few $$$ due to wear concerns will cause more long term injury issues, than getting a good pair now (or using your existing pair). Remember, prevention is better than any cure...

Microsoft supplying some Linux kernal code.

There are certain assumptions that HyperV make about the underlying OS. My guess MS are just covering their own, as they don't want the world to know they can't make a decent hyper visor either, or they royally screwed up their assumptions on how the world works when designing the hyper...

    Thoughts about educational systems

It may have been to the lower lever schools are so political bound, that they must pass everyone, so even a child who can not read at an adult level makes it through. Colleges are having to compensate for that. "No child left behind" policy seems to ring a bell. (Yep, we even heard about that...

    Thoughts about educational systems

I guess all the above certainly highlights the deficiencies in modern education systems, where political statue weighs more than the need and/or capability of the individual student. The Australian system basically works like this: 4-5 yr old - pre-school / prep (optional in some states)...

SSDs - State of the Product?

Yep, most linux binaries will work on FreeBSD systems, due to an emulation layer that the dynamic object loader uses to start binaries.
